good purchase legacy w bad HD? help
Hello,
I am new to the Subarus but sold my truck and want to get Subaru legacy outback. I have been kicking around the idea of buying a subie with bad gaskets and having them replaced.
I have 2 options possibly:
1 97 146K has loaded like ltd w/o leather seats private person
2 98 156K Ltd from a dealer
I would try to purchase either for 2000 and have the head gaskets replaced is this a good idea? Any speculations on how long the engines will last? Also besides having the HD replaced at a Subie dealer any suggestions what should be done?
Thanks for any thoughts!
Eric

Get the newer one, as it might have a Phase II block with the DOHC heads on it. The head gaskets may be bad, but the Phase II EJ25 block has a better design. There are probably some more features, other than leather, that the 98 has over the 97.
Get the water pump replaced and have them check the belt tensioners and timing belt, of course. Replace any seals, such as the rear main crank seal, etc. If you're getting a 5MT, consider a clutch replacement and flywheel resurfacing, if the engine is going to be removed.
