The passing of a Legend

WorldRallyNews.com is reporting that Ryuichiro Kuze passed away last Tuesday after a fight with cancer.

Kuze was the first president of Subaru Technica International, and was one of the most experienced engineers in the company. He helped to convince Subaru to start rallying and helped to start the long lasting relationship with Prodive.

Much of the above is paraphrased from a for-pay article by WorldRallyNews.com, and the full story is available to WRN subscribers here. Some information about Ryuichiro Kuze and Subaru's history of rallying here.

Kuze is pictured here with Tommi Makinen, Ari Vatanen and Marku Alen.

Without Kuze, I probably wouldn't be driving the car I have today. Without Kuze, I probably wouldn't care about rallying as much as I do. Without Kuze, I probably wouldn't have met anyone here on i-club. I owe quite a bit to a man I never knew. My thoughts, and the thoughts of all Subaru enthusiasts, go out to his family and friends.

More press releases (SWRT and STI) linked and copied in the comments section.

Eloquently put Nick. I truly hope FHI has someone capable of filling his shoes.

Response from the world rally team
http://www.swrt.com/694239.html

They will be wearing black armbands at this weeks Rally of Mexico
as a tribute to Mr Ryuichiro Kuze

The team was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mr. Kuze on Wednesday night in Japan.

Mr. Kuze was a former main board director of Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) and became the founding President of Subaru Tecnica International (STI) in 1988. In this role, he was instrumental in Subaru's decision to enter rallying and, having visited Europe in 1988 to determine the best partner for Subaru's motorsport programme, agreed a partnership with Prodrive.

With a passion for rallying, Mr. Kuze was a seasoned competitor in the Japan National Rally Championship and enjoyed considerable success as a driver. Even after his retirement, he was a regular visitor to the World Rally Championship, maintaining his relationship with the Subaru team he founded.

At this sad time our thoughts are with Mr. Kuze's family. As a mark of respect, the team will observe a minute's silence during the first service of Rally Mexico. SWRT drivers will wear black armbands and the rally cars will feature a modified livery in remembrance.

This man revolutionized a sport, a manufacturer, and a generation. Everything you see here, this club, your cars, you owe to him. He will be missed.

I'd like to offer my thanks to a man who sould by all accounts be remembered as a Subaru legend.

Without Mr. Kuze's talents, I wouldn't have my wonderful STi.

Thank you, Mr Kuze.

I can't think of a more fitting tribute to Mr. Kuze than for the SWRT to once again win the Manufacturer's Championship for Subaru. This is a lot more difficult than winning a single driver's championship and requires true teamwork.
