To wing or not to wing... that is the question.

Personally, I think it makes it look very good.

However, it simply isn't something that you can just "remove." You can just take it off, but then you are left with a trunk full of holes. You need to swap trunks with a wingless WRX of the same color. If you do that, make sure you swap lock cylinders, otherwise neither of you can use your trunks with your keys.

Here's one of many threads on the trunk lid swap I found using the forum Search feature, key words 'trunk' and 'lid'. Don't forget the counterbalance spring(s) which is a rod inside the trunk which acts like a torsion bar to counteract the weight of the winged/wingless trunk lid.

Locating someone willing to swap with you can be a problem if you're not located near an active subie community. Shipping the trunk lid and parts can be a hassle for both parties. In northern and southern CA there are enough active members so that many have been able to complete the swap (but not all).

I special ordered my car from Japan through my dealership in the color I wanted and with no wing.

Window sticker price - I didn't mind letting them make a few hundred bucks since they were nice enough to work with me from the minute I brought up the possibility of ordering one. The sales guy went through the ordering or fleet manager to get me exactly the car I wanted. They told me it would take eight to ten weeks for production and shipping but it arrived in eight. This was a MY02 model WRX. Too bad they couldn't order me a JDM version for import.

Some dealers are willing to do this for customers, even first time customers. Others ignore you if you even make the suggestion about not buying what they have sitting on the lot.
