Peaty,

Thanks for the GREAT link, very helpful. Have you looked into replacing the complete fog light assembly at all as opposed to just changing the bulbs? If so, are there any you recommend? Hella's FF500 seems to be popular.

Also, are the bulbs from Daniel Stern the best you've used so far? I'm looking to get an '03 RS soon and would like to upgrade the lighting immediately.

Thanks,
Bill

I've replaced the OEM fogs on a previous Subaru (our 97 outback) mostly because the OEM ones were very crappy, plastic and all. I used PIAA's and was very happy with them. The ones on the RS/WRX are pretty good as far as pattern and quality. Changing them out isn't a bad idea but I have 2 sets of covers, hard ones and those clip on clear ones. If I were to change I couldn't use either so I'm gonna stick w/ the OEM ones in my RS.

I've been using the bulbs from Stern for about a month so far and I'm very pleased with them. Short of upgrading the harness and going w/ more wattage these drop in's are a good upgrade. I know there are bulbs out there that look "whiter" but there is no proof that the whiter they are the better you can see. I agree they may be nice to look at but I'm interested in seeing better not looking better.

Stern can help w/ upgrading the harness too but I was more interested in something quick and easy.

I'm pretty happy w/ the rear bulb upgrades too. They put out more light but aren't blinding like the brakes are on. It's been a plus in this crappy weather we've been having lately.

Peaty,

This sounds exactly like what I'm looking to do, something easy that I can drop in to help me SEE better. I've email Daniel and hope to hear his recommendations. Do you have any links similar to the one you provided for headlights on www.scoobymods.com for foglight BULB replacement?

Thanks,
Bill

I only have a link for Fog Lamp bulb replacement for our 02' Outback VDC. That won't help you though. The bulb in the RS will be different and it's a lot easier to change. There are 3- 10mm bolts that hold the lamp on:

(I know your bumper will be different but the lamp is the same all except the harness plug)

Take those off and the lamp will come right out. The bulb is held in similar to the headlamp. There is a small spring clip to undo and just take the old bulb out and put the new one in. Pretty simple actually. Just don't go over wattage or it will turn the silver hood brown due to the heat. I've seen this happen on a friends RS.

I have the PIAA Ion type bulb, shines yellow and in my wife's car these Narva all weather ones that also shine yellow but it's a much lighter yellow than the PIAA"S. If I didn't pay so much for the PIAA's I'd swap them out for the Narva's

Here are the PIAA's:

And here are the Narva's

Of course these are 9006's and you'd be looking at H3's instead but you get the idea.

I would highly suggest not getting silverstars for the fogs espically. They tend to be towards the blue/white end of the spectrum and will scatter light more I should think. Just the oppsite of what you want in fog.
