Hi guys- I would like to introduce myself- I have been around this forum for a couple of years. I am the original owner of a 2002 WRX wagon. It was the first car I bought new after years of used cars and now has 112,000 miles on it. (I do track events at Watkin's Glen with it when time permits and have slowly tuning the car: I have wilwoods all around, a cobb AP, invidia up and down pipe, an STI exhaust, 17" OEM BBS wheels, struts, adjustable rear sway etc)
It's been a great ride, love to real in those Boxsters and M3s in the turns and pass them on the straights.
Due to recent events, I think I am about to do some exterior changes: see, I was on my way to pick up my son at RIT on the highway when BANG!!
The f'n hood flew up and the smashed the windshield with such force that it damaged the roof. I could see the headliner was wrinkled slightly at the corners.
I was able to pull over, get a tow truck, and get it to a body shop. I haven't heard from them yet- I may just let them fix it as is or I may decide to do the work myself.
Now, I am assuming at this point I can get a carbon fiber hood, but does anyone know if anyone makes or could make, a CF roof for the wagon? I know there are CF roofs for the sedan.
Any help (or sympathy) would be appreciated.

Well first off.... Welcome to the club!

As for your roof, as far as I know, most of the CF roofs are just a CF skin that goes on top of the sheet metal (I could be wrong). I would suggest to go with an aluminum replacement. Aluminum is usually less expensive than Carbon Fiber and more often than not Aluminum is also lighter than Carbon Fiber.

Also maybe get some hood pins while you are at it.

Seibon makes one for the sedan- you have to take off the old steel skin and bond the new one to the rails.

I just called them and they import all of their stuff (figures) but don't make a roof for the wagon, nether does APR. I am not sure if I can get a CF roof made custom for the price covered by the claim, so i may end up with just a new skin.
I am not aware of anyone making an aluminum one either- if anyone has leads let me know. The CF parts are more dent resistant than the aluminum panels, unless you make it thick, which is why the aluminum hoods on the WRX weigh as much as they do. i am sure they started a lot lighter, but it was probably too thin for the general market buyer they were aiming for.

I've seen the CF sedan roof that's 16lbs lighter than stock. I don't know about anything for wagons though. Maybe a stock replacement? or custom? How about roofless and caged up. haha

Get some hood pins ASAP!

Despite what everyone says, I found that my CF hood IS lighter than the stock aluminum one. I had the wrc style seibon one.

I've heard another story on another forum about this, too. My hood wobbles slightly on the freeway, should be looking to install hood pins just in case?

 

AMS makes a carbon fiber roof panel. But its not easy to install. I did it on my car.

 

Anyone running a carbon fiber hood, should be using hood pins!

That TMIC scoop is lifting the hood and this cracks the oem hood latch mount on a carbon fiber hood.

And at some point.. Bammmm You have a new front window shade.

This stuff happens more then you think!

 

The same thing happened to a guy here on Guam.

 

that's no fun, happened to me at 35mph, luckily only windshield got damaged.
