Andy-
As I understand it, a standard sized turbo timer (HKS, GReddy) will fit nicely into that blank panel with a bit of Dremel work. Have a look:

Might want to check out A'PEXi

I think most people use this when replacing that spot with a TT... wish I had it too, I got the GReddy that replaces the ashtray
oh well

ah cool the apex'i looks good. I have an older apex'i that i had for my conquest but ended up putting in a greddy to match my profec a, rebic III, and rebic III simulator... it's much too deep and not wide enough to fit next to the cup holder.
the apex'i looks great esp. for the silver trim. But does anyone know where to get carbon fiber tape to match OEM carbon fiber option for '02/'03 trim
thanks

I am glad that you like it. It wasnt that difficult to do. That trim piece comes out by removing the cupholder. Extend the cupholder and unscrew the 2 screws that hold it in. It needs to be coaxed out, dont yank on it or you can snap the trim piece that surrounds the radio. The top piece where the hazard light switch is pops out. It is only help in by clips. Don't yank on this either because you have to unclip the hazard light wiring harness. I cut the trim using a Dremel with a cut-off wheel attachment. Be careful because if you cut too big you are screwed. Take measurements. Then measure it again. Then again. That little piece is over 50 bucks to replace. I also had to cut off one of the clips that hold the trim in, so it is only held by 2 clips now but it is still tight. Hook up the wiring (I strongly recommend getting a wiring harness, they make kits for the WRX. Saves you a lot of cutting and splicing.) I used 3M double stick tape to hold down the turbo timer so when you push the buttons it doesnt push back into the dash. The foam tape that HKS gave me sucked. Put everything together and you are done. Pretty easy.
