Insanely ugly rubber shift boot
Insanely ugly rubber shift boot
After years of lurking on this website, I was finally able to pickup a 98 RS coupe w/ only 21000 miles on it.
I love the car, but the only thing that's driving me nuts is the shifter boot. It looks like it should be on a semi or something, it consists of incrementally smaller rubber rectangles. Sorry, I'd post a pic, but I just moved and I'm not sure what box my digital camera is in.
I've spent the better part of the last hour or so searching i-club to see if anyone else has replaced this boot, or even find any boot that anyone suggests, but I've had no luck.
Can anyone point me to a decent leather shift boot that will fit on my 98 RS? A manufacturer, website, or anything would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I am sure you can find a leather one from a later RS with fancy red stitching (ooh, nice) from any dealer. To save money you should even look at a local wrecking yard.
OR
Use one of your old tube-socks and just cut a hole in it. Red an Blue stripe would be killer!

I checked www.subaruparts.com for you
They have pictures of the shiftboot (on their pictures of new shift *****) but no actual listing of the leather shift boot. You might try e-mailing/calling them. If that doesn't work, try calling/e-mailing the guys at www.4subarusuzukikiaparts.com

Thanks for the tips guys. That subaru parts site is nice and will definately be the first place I look from now on. I emailed them and hopefully they will be able to help me. I'm also going to call a few junkyards and the local subaru dealer on monday.
Thanks again
Thanks again

I'm in the same boat, I'm 94...
I gave up and i decided to love the rubberness. Its actually not bad if you change the shift **** to more competition oriented ones and it seems to look more hardcore than later RS ones.. at least Im trying to think that way..
Are you sure it's a different size? While searching google I found this 2.5 RS Site where the owner of a 98 RS installed a leather boot from a 99 with pics and everything.
I haven't actually gotten around to replacing it yet, but it is possible.
The link I posted earlier on the thread shows a site with step by step instructions on how to replace it, and you can buy the boot at a local Subaru dealer, or you can buy it from SubaruParts. com by following this link.

That's the correct part, I asked a guy at the site if that was correct just to double check because the name of the part seems like it's more than just the boot, but the guy went and looked at the part and it's the leather shift boot.
Hope this helps.

http://www.wac.addr.com/auto/obs/shifter/shifter.html (may be what u refered too but this is more direct) has detailed info. I bought http://www.andysautosport.com/subaru...hiftboots.html and it works/looks good, tho it is a string holding it up rather than elastic, so u can kinda c it a little
