The headlights aren't "automatic". Your car has daytime running lights which means the low beams operate at reduced output any time the car is being driven and the headlights are not on.
Many people have disabled this "feature", if you want to do so search for threads on "DRL" or "daytime running lights", there are many such threads here with the info you need. Also look on scoobymods (www.scoobymods.com), it's there too.

 

Somebody here rigged their daytime running lamps to the turn signal. It's on this forum somewhere. Just thought i'd bring up the alternate idea.
