Heading to the snow with chipped windshield

I've got a bit of a spider on my windshield. It doesn't run but I'm sure that if someone were to bang it with a closed fist the crack would definitely start to run.

If I head up to the slopes with the all the snow is it possible for the water to seep into the small crack, freeze and just make the crack bigger???

Is there anything I can apply to prevent this or am I just over reacting?

Ryan

this might sound wierd, but you can try to fill the spider with crazy glue. and then kinda crazy glue the cracks if it runs off. Then take a razor blade and scrape off any excess glue so the windshield is smooth again. I have no experience. just a theory. good luck!

There's a filler you can buy at any autoshop to prevent it from running. I'm a Kragen hater so I would suggest, Winchester Auto or Autozone.

I'll check autozone or Kragen then and see what they've got.

Exclamation Glues Not Gonna Work

hey man glue is only good for knicks, i think the said smaller than a nickel. i got a small knick on the way home last seaon and by the time i got home that thing was half way up my windshield. on top of that you have a spider AND you take into consideration that the lower temperature up in tahoe is way colder AND youre gonna be speeding to and from the slopes. you are in a impreza right?

thats my 2 cents, you might not want to drive that fast either once you get closer to tahoe so you dont put so much pressure on your spider.

i always thought that the cold induces shrinkage. at least, according to Seinfeld's George Costanza! heh heh

be careful on 80 folks. i finally got nailed by johnny law last fri on the way back fr: Boreal. BOOO!!! Big Fat BBBBOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

in all seriousness, my guess is that the change in both temp. & elev.(=pressure) will make the crack worse. then throw in the fact that you'll probably turn on the defroster/defogger. yikes!

btw, which resort are you hitting up? i'm hoping to hit the slopes on sat.

i read up somewhere that the thing that causes the cracks is when you get moisture in the cracks and the temperature differences cause it to expand/contract and the crack gets bigger.....i'll try and find the link later

I'm heading up to Heavenly for my 27th bday.

And to clarify it's not the cold that causes the crack to run. It's when water seeps into the crack, and freezes. Water expands when frozen which is why sometimes when heading up to Tahoe you'll see huge rocks with cracks running through them.

I kinda figured the same applies to the spider on my windshield and was hoping someone could recommend some type of sealant to apply. I know there are those windshield repair places but they charge at least $50!!!

if you are gonna spend 50+ dollars on it, you might as well get a new windshield. just tell yore insurance company that a the poor condition of the roads caused a truck to kick rocks up at your wind shield. i didnt get any crap for that.

you guys know how bad freeways are now. i've had to dodge ladders washers and a 2x4 even dented my rim. insurance companies know how bad roads are, just be cool and explain it to them.

There are like $8 kits i think you can get at autozone/kragens. But the crack has to be within a certain size (about the size of a quarter maybe)

the sealant kits are for "bullseye cracks", not "spider cracks".

same goes for professional windshield repair services, the type that use UV lights to cure the glue.
