gauge lighting woes

i've been setting up my gauges all afternoon, but cant seem to find power for the boost gauge. its an autometer mechanical boost gauge, so it only needs a live wire for light. i was told to go behind the radio and use the pink wire (the other wire is orange) in the empty harness thats used for the stock boost lighting. i did this, but it doesnt seem to be giving me any power. any suggestions?

I'd highly recommend running over to RadioShack and buying a cheap multimeter. It'll save you from frying stuff... and from frying yourself.
If you have a multimeter you can do stuff like this:
The harness to the clock has two power lines: one is always hot, one is ignition-on hot. With the multimeter you can put the black to a chasis ground and the red to the one of the pins in the clock hardness. Turn the key on the car and find out which pin is which. Then you know which lines to tap to get the power you want.
Also, I'd recommend getting a copy of the wiring section of the service manual... you could get one of those electronic PDF backup *cough* version to, uh, *cough* preserver you *cough* original copies. Ahem.
