Post DIY: autometer boost guage install

yep, so go ahead and make fun of my work, im not worried about it. i dont claim to be an expert at interior work. also, i dont take any responsibility for anything that may occur from other's following my recomendations.

with that out of the way:

i installed my guage to the right of my clock.

1. decide if this is what you want
2. get the parts(boost guage, T fitting, zip ties, etc)
3. pull the clock pannel
4. cut into the clock pannel. this is where it got sketchy, no one has done this, or atleast documented this, so i was experimenting for all. if anything, i hope someone takes this to the next level and make's theirs look that much better. when cutting the hole, you must consider the shape of the guage. i have a general guide of where to cut. i definitely recoment not cutting too much, like mine, i cut too much and it shows. but i dont care. i started by getting a hole through, using a hack saw. then used a flat head screw driver to pop that apart. when i got to that point, i used my sheet metal cutters for the rest. the file isn't needed. i also used a drill later to pop 2 holes between the plastic brace for the clock.
5. at this point, it all should fit, sorta. this is when i mounted it. first i decided on its direction. second i put in the bulb and the boost line. then i mounted it using flexible metal wire which i wraped around one of the inserts that holds the fixture in the dash. i also fished the wire through the holes i drilled and wraped it around the bolts exiting the back of the guage. this acutally held it in place very sturdidly.
6. for electricity, i pulled out the stereo and fan cluster and underneath that, there is a light for the ash tray. i cut the wires and used that source for power, works perfect and is turned on with the lights too.
7. popped a hole in the grommet behind the brake pedal, feed the boost line through and connected it to the T which connected to the dv area.
and done.

again, i hope someone takes this write-up to the next level. i dont care too much about the car after comming out of the vw scene with a heavily modified turbo'd car, all i care about is getting the car running and monitored fine. so, someone make this look good and may my work not be in vien... hehe.

If you tilt it upwards a little and put some of that black molding on all the edges, it may help aesthetically

Not a bad job....just a bit out of line of sight for my taste.
Like Legacy05GT said, a little trim ring around the egdes would make it look cleaner.

Definately an original idea. A+ for creativity
