driving lights
i am interested in getting some additional driving lights. i do a lot of driving on backroads and dirt roads and want something that will give me better vision, especially to help avoid deer and elk.
a key thing though is i want something that you can remove and put back on fairly easily so that i don't have to always have them on the car.
any suggestions?

I saw someone with additional lights mounted in the opening between the two fog lights. It looked good and you can't tell they are even there because they are mounted deep and they are fairly small but very good light output. Just make sure u get the projection ones. Just my 0.02cents.

drill a mesh on the grille side pieces
If your exterior setup still has the grille side pieces, how about drilling perforation holes on them, or cutting a big hole and putting a mesh. Then, you can mount your aux driving lights there. There's up to 3 inches of clearance, depthwise, so the choice of lights are definitely limited. Some of the hella optiluxes are only 2.75 inches deep though, so they would fit.
It's definitely not a "detachable" option, but at least the lights are hidden.
This is not exactly what I'm saying, but it's the closest to what I mean:

I'll try to get around to taking a pic for you later, but ran in to the same thing you did I wanted more light for the back roads. So i removed the stock fogs and installed some Hella 1000FF driving light in the stock locations. That provided more than enough light on flat roads but...... I found when I came to a hill, I had line of sight over the hill a along time before i got the light over the hill. So to solve this problem. I went out and got a set of hella 75FF's and mounted them to my roof rack (I had got a yakima rack for my snowboards and bike so i didnt have to put them in my trunk) and aimed them 25-30 ft in front of my car. Now anything I have in my line of sight is lit up like it was day time.

Depending on where you are, local laws may give you problems regarding placing lights so high up without covers. You're one of the fortunate ones if you don't live in such a place.

I recommend the Cibié Oscar Plus. These are fantastic. I don't know why they don't get talked about much.
You can't even compare a Hella 500 to these.
I have them in the driving light pattern and mounted them in place of the stock fog lights (WRX) to run only with the high beams.
Deer on the roadways are a major problem around here. These lights greatly improve night time safety.
I had to fabricate a mounting bracket out of some aluminum sheet and some pop rivets. Well worth it.

Hey Ryan - there's a lot of posts on the other site about this. I will share my journey down this path.
Options:
Hella 500's - fog or driving. Cheap - only $70/pair and have stock wattage 55w. Which is good - minimal wiring, but only a bit brighter than Stock. I have the fogs, with clear lexan rock guards. I like'm they fill in the headlights and offer some side light. I used the Kartboy mounts.
PIAA 80XT's - 125 Watts of crazy power. Need to re-wire and add the included Relay. It's said these really bright, so much so, you can't use them around traffic. They should be wired to your brights so you can quickly dim them. $260 for the pair (kit). Kartboy mounts are a necessity.
Cibie's are supposedly a very good quality lamp. Hard to find tho' and I couldn't get any confirmation for mounting. Looks like you could go custom. MRT dealers may have more info as MRT offers them for Subies.
One lamp I'm keeping my eye on is the Hella FF200. It comes in both Halogen and HID Xenon. I might get these for aux. driving lamps at grill level for nightime rallys. Stay tuned.
