Automatic seat belt relay
I am having trouble determing the problem with the automatic seat belt on my 1992 Subuaru Legacy L Wagon. I have determined that the motor that pulls the seat belt in the track works but only in one direction. In other words the motor will push the seat belt to the open position when the car door is open but it will not pull the seat belt to the closed positon when the car door is closed and the ignition key is turned to the "on" postion. It worked fine until last Friday (August 19). So, I took apart the motor and checked the cable and everything looks okay. Also it is only the driver's side that is not working properly.
My question is this: Is there a relay of some sort that could have burned out that tells the seat belt motor when to push and pull the seat belt? And if so, where is it located? I picked up Haynes repair manual and have looked at Chilton's as well but neither mention the automatic seat belt system or show the schematic for it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Search for this topic at http://bbs.legacycentral.org That forum is devoted to first generation models, and the topic has come up. I had the same problem but never got it resolved before selling the car.

if the motor is good as you say....... try see if the door switch is faulty.< it suppose to tell the motor that door is closed. is the door switch exterior or is it built in the latch. its probably a intermittent problem. try...... open the door, close the door latch like you are faking out like its closed. try move/giggle the latch see if it operates,or if it is exterior(switch) play with the switch see if it operates.
OOR you can just keep closing the door over and over and see if it operates. ^if this confuses you.... kinda like the same procedure.
