I think the dimmer wire gets wires to a constant 12 volt source.

Then of course you have your 12volt power and ground.

You prolly have a boost/vacuum gauge then, and it would go +/- depending on how you're driving.

Red- 12v power source
Black- ground
purple/brown- prolly will be wired up together to a constant 12v source

The difference between the 12v source for the red is that it will be wired to a 12v source that is turned on when the ignition is turned on.

the purple/brown will always be "on", even tho the gauge will not be lit up or anything.

As far as where to tap into, do you have or can you get a hold of a light pen? You can take out the coin tray on the lower left part of the dash and behind it are the fuses. Then take the light pen to see what fuses have power to them when the ignition is off. When the pen lights, that fuse has power and you can use that fuse for the purple/brown.

Then go back to the fuses that did not light up and turn the ignition on. Now when it lights up, you know that fuse only gets power when the ignition is turned. This is where you would want to connect your red wire.

And to "splice" all the wires in to the fuses you want, you can get an "add a circut" (AAC) at any local parts store. Would look something like this:
Name: add-a-circuit.jpg
Views: 117
Size: 8.5 KB

So you pull the fuse out of the fuse box, crimp in the wires you want going to that fuse into the add a circut and then plug the AAC into the fuse box and then put the original fuse into the AAC

Tell me if that makes sense or if i lost you lol

usually on the 08+ wrx and sti that gets the spt boost gauge installed at the dealer, the harness connects to the clock unit. dont know if that helps you out at all but hopefully you figure it out

Are they turning off when you turn just the headlights on or the high beams on, you might have tapped into the foglight fuse as your power source (fog lights turn off when high beams are on).

I think the only purpose of the brown/purple would be for the dimmer, but thats only if the gauge has a dimming feature (my gauge came wiht an orange/brown but didnt have a dimming feature).

Hmm. I would try to just use another fuse for the AAC, see if that would fix it
