Minolta is O.G. in the photography industry!! I heard that in the film area, they got some real great lenses that you dont even need to Post Process. It just comes out great laddat, pending if the Photographer is actually knowing what he's doing.
Any great photographer will tell you that its not the camera body, but the lense that makes a "BIG" difference. That and having "THE EYE". Not the rapist eye, nor the SAURON EYE, but the Photographer EYE!! Hope this help Dan.

If he "gave" it to you then its awesome. It'll be really good to use this equipment to see if you actually want to get in to it before you start spending some real money on it.

The camera is decent, but that lens (18-70mm 3.5-5.6 I believe?) will leave much to be desired. It will suit you fine as an every day walkaround lens and if you invest in better lenses then you can use it as your "don't give a **** if it drops and breaks" lens. The minolta brand was bought by Sony shortly after the 5D came out so all the new Sony Alpha lenses will work with that camera except those with SSM focusing motors built into the lens. However there is a LOT of magnificent older Minolta lenses on the used market for a great price. I would suggest that you get a Minolta 50mm f1.7 prime lens, around $75-125, and between that and the lens you have now you can really take some great shots and see if you want to get into photography more seriously.
For all the information you could ever need and some of the most helpful people on the net check out www.dyxum.com it is a forum and lens database that is dedicated to the A-mount lens and cameras that use them (which yours is). You can also pm me for more info if you have any questions, I know just about everything about the system since I use it myself.
