Turbo help.

Hey guys and gals i new to the island been here for about 3 weeks now. I have my 06 sti here ive had the car for about 3k miles and some change. Last night i was driving and pushed it a little to get on the highway got up to about 70 then dropped back down to 55. When i was pulling into the parking lot i noticed a knocking noise. it bothered me at first and i thought nothing of it. Then today i was driving and i heard it again. the more i drive the louder it gets (duh). My friend and i checked it out and i figured it was the turbo. What options do i have get another stock one? Go a little bigger ( was my plan in a few months when i can get my car all done at once). FMIC Oil pump injectors pro tune. Also how long can i drive it like this before it goes completely.

sounds like a broken weld on the heat shield to me. hard to really tell in that video. if you want to be sure take the turbo off and check for damage to the fins or shaftplay. before doing that though check the shields on the up pipe and the headers to make sure one's not just broken and rattling.

If it's the heat shield on the up pipe it doesn't hurt anything. Simply upgrade your up pipe to an after market one and you should be fine.

If it's a rattling noise it'll get louder and quite embarrassing if it is the heat shield.

when the car is COLD you can reach down there and actually move around the heat shield if that's the problem.

i just went out and looked at the heat shield on the up pipe. i can move it about an inch up and down and it has some play around it too. if its just the heat shield then i might just have to shoot myself in the face.

Also i live on Schofield Barracks in the 9000 block.

it is... there are very weak COLD welds on the up pipe from the factory. When you rev sounds horrible.

It's hard to cut it off because of it being two or three ply. soooo. order your choice or variety of up pipe and the problem will be fixed after you replace it. Now the problems YOU create when doing this cannot be foreseen... hehehe LOL

I dont think its the turbo and i dont think its the up pipe heat shield. It sounds like something is moving around in my intake manifold like a piece of metal just floating around.

what he means is that depending on your level of skill you might mess something up while doing it if you can't say....count to ten and tell your left from your right. seriously though it would be impossible to be sure until you fix the up pipe shield. shove some header wrap or go ghetto and use a rag. try rev a few times and if the sound is gone thats your problem. don't be fooled as sounds often appear to be coming from the wrong place and your mind plays awful tricks when you know something is wrong.

i tried reving it again and had someone hold the heat shield and you can still hear the noise. i hate how it sounds like the whole car is broken when you dont know what is wrong with it.

I doubt the whole car is broken.

Find a long screwdriver, prybar, or something long and solid. Press the smooth end against your earhole. Press the othe end against the turbo, both heads, PS pump, Alt., Compressor, block. Pretend you are a doctor and it is a stethoscope. (Then come play doctor with me.)

If there is a rattling, this will help narrow down where it is coming from.
