Tuning thread
Richard, Pat, or anyone for that matter. Lets put up a little FAQ or tuning primer so that we can get some quick ideas or thoughts on whats ideal for tuning whether it be your UTEC's, my LINK, an Xede... whatever.

Random Rule of Thumb Thought #1:
1. Set Boost
2. Set AFR
3. Set Timing
4. Repeat steps 1-3
Random Rule of Thumb Thought #2:
Stage 4 TXS WRX should be seeing EGT's of 850-875 with 24-25 degrees of advance at redline after a WOT 3rd gear pull. This "equates" to ~10.8:1 afr.
Random Rule of Thumb Thought #3:
Knock is VERY BAD when it's audible.
Random Rule of Thumb Thought Scooby Myth#4:
The computer doesn't learn your "driving habits". It has a very few specific modifiers (ignition advance and fuel trim) that it applies when looking up data on it's ignition/fuel tables.
Random Rule of Thumb Thought #5:
Boost affects AFR. AFR can affect boost. Timing can affect boost. Timing can affect EGT.
Random Rule of Thumb Thought #6:
Turbo spool time is GREATLY affected by tuning.
Random Rule of Thumb Thought #7:
UTEC Stage 4 base maps are PIG RICH at higher rpm's.

Amazing how much stumbling you can cause a car by putting a super rich fuel value in a map, eh?

You are going VERY fast when doing 4th gear pulls.

The stock ECU ignores your knock sensor at 5700rpm plus.
The stock ECU also THROWS heaps of ignition advance at the engine at high rpm.
Most of the timing table changes made in the Unichips and UTEC maps are to REDUCE timing at high rpm for safety.

It's MUCH easier to use a Wideband with a datalogger. That being said, if you have 3 amigos in the car it's doable as well! (Wes is a great camera man!

The stock o2 sensor is WORTHLESS from a WOT tuning standpoint.

Interesting you post this... Now many tuners do this on purpose and they do it to be conservative in their tuning. Call it safe if you will.
But is it really needed? Not like any of us are tuning to the edge. From 3.5k to 6k we're tuning for 10.8-11:1 it seems after that point most tuners are going off the scale and are richer then 10.2:1 near redline.

Oxygen sensors need to heat up before they read properly. That's why they're heated and that's why most vehicle won't go into closed loop operation for a period of time after start-up or until the ECU notices that the O2 sensor voltage is oscillating properly.

How does a loser like myself with a LINK that controls the factory EBC set boost if leaning out my maps will also make things spool faster? If it spools faster I may also get spikes. Perhaps I should get a MBC?

I have a great dialog going on with Phi @ TurboXS (that guy's an absolute ASSET to his company!) where this was said:

Richard,
Yeah, we run it rich on purpose. We will most likely redo STG4 now that we have so many running it without too many issues.
Take a look at your data logs a little closer and you will see that you are carrying more boost in 4th than in 3rd. You can also see that you are in the 100% column the whole time in 4th. More boost means more fuel. You could lean your car out in the 100% column in the upper rpm ranges but you may have to reduce ignition timing there also.
Thanks,
Phil Grabow

Dammit how about some generic info for us non-UTEC users. You know there are things outside of the UTEC you know
Okay I admit I dont have resources like the boys at TurboXS, I'm just jealous

Ever think about running a MBC?
I'm going to be switching back over to UTEC closed loop boost control in the near future (maybe even in a week or so).
You're more than welcome to run my JoeP MBC if/when that happens!
Faster spool doesn't necessarily have to mean boost spiking though, does it?
