Question for those with tuning interests........

Some of you know i have ECUTEK. I am soon going to be purchasing a FMIC for my car along with some other goodies, however, my ECU isnt gonne like alot of change. I made a call to a friend and got ahold of a guy names scott out of atlanta who does tuning for subaru (ecutek, cobb, utek, ETC.) His conditions were as follows were pretty simple, pay for room and ticket to hawaii. fair enough. his price for tuning is $120hr or about $850 for your choice of reflash with 2 hours of tuning time included.

Im curious to see who would like to have their car tuned while this guy is down here, im not sure yet when im going to be able to afford the ticket for him to come down but if i had a bunch of guys wanting to tune it would make things easier. let me know what you guys think.

i like the idea but me personally i will wait for a awd dyno, road tuning would suck due to limited straight roads, illegal speeding....

This is actually not a bad idea since campbell has more than enough straight aways. i'd be interested after i build my 2.2T in about 2 months.

WOW....I need a career change! (part-time) $120/HR , Im in the wrong field of work here. I've been tuning cars for years (hobby) and am now in the process of tweaking my SUBY STI for even more power. Heck, maybe I should think about investing on the equipment to allow me to reflash the stock ECU so I can tweak everyone's "untuned" SUBYs here at much lower rate of $90/HR (a do-able figure after factoring in capital expenses perhaps), and as for a road dyno, theres nothing better than having a G-tech Pro RR to show you a before and after result. Ive done quite a bit of experimentation with my own suby already, and I believe my results speaks for itself. The only thing Im concerned about is If I actually decide to do this, theres gonna be a good possibility that I may no longer have one of the quickest subarus here in hawaii.....(LOL)

$850 for a reflash??? sounds pretty expensive to me, especially for a one-time tune, which cannot be altered for different octane levels! Heck tuners with decent reputation only charge $650 + S/H....Hmmmm

i asked the dealer and he said the program with license is 5G, thats just for the 04 WRX, non compatible with STI. AS for being compatible with 02-03, im not sure.

as for 850 i think that a reasonable price since $850 covers the reflash plus 2 hurs of tuning, but JT dont you have UTEK or something? All you would have to pay is the 120 an hour for tuning.

so yeah if its 5g's for just the 04, itll cost about 10-20 grand for them all.

this has been brought up before and nate and carlos. They ended up going against it since it would be a TOTAL WASTE OF TIME since we don't have a dyno. that guy CANNOT GAURENTEE that his tune will be the best for your car our conditions...etc.

the amount of time and money that you'd be spending doing this isn't worth it. sorry to kill your dreams but without an AWD dyno your street tunes won't have the best results with the parts you have.

i would do more research on road tuning before you jump into this. I would also find out what kind of gaurentee this guy has on his tune...etc.

just some thoughts. sorry to step on your toes guys but the hours and hours you spend tuning on the road can be solved in about 30-45 minutes on a properly configured/certified AWD dyno with trained staff.

Just to warn you of a few things. 1, I have heard of that exact tunner blowing engines on the dyno. I would never trust someone to road tune who can't dyno tune since there are a thousand more conditions that you have to worry about when on the road. 2, those prices are assinine! To get a dyno tune it is less that $120 hr. So basically you guys are going to buy him a free vacation and then pay out the butt for a tune? I am unhappy with my ECUTek, and I would never recommend it to anyone again. JT-STI2 is right. He has some amazing results from his car. I would hope that he would help for a pizza and beer or something. I can't agree with charging fellow suby owners for some help. Now if you just want to drop the car off and get a tune, have at it and pay him $90 an hour.

You don't need a dyno to tune, but you need some long straight, and as flat as possible roads to tune on. You can tune on the 1/4, but then you are going to have trouble under more engine load on the street, like when you go over the mountains. Ask Pat about that.

I say get an Exede, or Street-tunner, and have at it. As for some help from people like Ryan and Vakamon, or Joel (JT-STI2). Just my opinion.
