Technical Advice: EVAP system
I'd figure I post it here since there's none found here on i-club.com
Story:
One day right after filling up gas, my Subaru decided its been almost 6 years without getting any mechanical failure and decided to throw a DTC p1443 which indicates a "EVAP system Vent control function Malfunction" according to my Subaru Factory Service Manual and according to 3rd party sources "Evap System Vent Control solenoid valve malfunction".
Problem:
Car starts up fine wether it be traveling from point A to point B etc. etc. and no performance issue's. The only issue is when after filling up gas. Some how the engine cranks but doesnt start. The only way to get the engine to start is by stepping on the gas while cranking will the engine starts. And when it does start it stumbles and dies. The only success to get it to operate is by cranking while stepping on the gas and when the engine does start, I quickly shift into drive to slow drive off. Its all Good after that until the next fill up.
My DIY Diagnostic:
After countless hours of research via NASIOC, rs25.com, iwsti.com, and scoobymods.com, and my Subaru Factory Service Manual. I have checked the vent lines visually, visually inspected the charcoal canister and emptied out charcoal pellets on two occassions, blew 40 PSI of compressed air into the vent lines to hopefully blow out stuck charcoal pellets, connected the test connectors to check if the solenoids are operable by listening for the clicks, and even monitored some data loggs. My Pressure control Solenoid valve located near the charcoal canister is clicking which indicates its still operable. I also believe the Purge Control Solenoid valve under the intake manifold is operable to as I hear clicking near the area.
Resolution:
None so far as I reset and cleared the ECU and the Diagnostic Trouble Code and it came back on afer driving almost 30 miles.
If anybody encountered the same situation as me, please feel free to share your experience. The Car is grounded now until my date with Servco Subaru to see if there's something I missed.
My theory:
1. The Vent valve located under the chasis and on top of the gas tank is clogged by Charcaol pellets.
2.The Drain valve or Purge valve is clogged.
3. The Charcoal Canister needs to be replaced(obviously due to loose pellets).
Here are some illustrations: Unfortunately the Subaru FSM doesnt give specific details for numbers as far as temperature for Fuel Tank, etc. etc. So if you see some numbers that don't look right, please bring it up to my attention.

Thanks for your time,
NiNJA

Check your Valve Purge (itʻs the thing that is Circle in Red)
While driving mine got disconnected and caused my ECU to throw that same code.

From my viewpoint:
sounds more like a PCM issue....an evap code wont affect any driveability except that of controlling fuel vapors...issues of evap are vapor leaks which the pcm detects (emission purposes) and hard to fill gas tanks...
though theres a first for everything ...let us know what you find...

Hey Danny, thanks for your insight! I was thinking maybe it could have been the PCM since i know the bugeye's were notorious for the p1443 and they had to be reflashed via the Subaru Dealership but no issues towards the peanut eye. Though you have a point that it could be a vapor leak, i have smoke tested it and couldnt find anything which even make me think more its a faulty mechanism.I just hope there's not alot of charcoal pellets in the tank and the pellets are just clogging something. I do know that all the solenoids related to the evap system are function at least IMO. Gotta check the voltage though. At least Im not stressin as much now about it.

There's a reason why your gas fill door says not to overfill gas after the gas pump handle clicks. Do you continue filling after the pump handle clicks? You might overflow the fuel into the charcoal canister and cause an overly rich condition when the car is started. The fuel vapors, and possibly fuel, can stay in the charcoal canister until it is extracted from vacuum at first startup.
