Suggestions on tires

Ok I definitely need a new set...what's good for our rainy and pot hole infested state? And any place u would recommend besides Costco(nothing against them) just don't wanna limit my options.. I'm running 235/17/40 90y...Yokohama s drive now and one went out today...can't get the same tire here only at tirerack...don't think it's worth it to ship one tire...

Unless you value some sort of ride comfort, which the star specs do not provide. They're very loud, I mean EXTREMELY loud even driving at low speeds. Most guys with cars like ours can stand this, but be aware that there are some out there who can't. I for one could not normally, but I want the performance more than the comfort, so I have the Star Specs. That being said I kinda wish I just splurged on the Advan AD08s or Bridgestone RE11s, so much more quieter and forgiving daily driving.

To the OP: What do YOU want from the tires and car? There are way too much different types of tires out there to just choose one and end thread. There is literally a tire out there for everyone. What do you intend to need them for? If you have no plans for any competitive driving or the like, I really don't see the need for Star Specs. I can recommend the Bridgestone RE760 Sports for DD. Reasonable grip, sort of soft but not too much, and a big plus for me: QUIET!

And just an FYI, unless you know someone working at a local business, tirerack.com will almost ALWAYS be cheaper than local prices even with shipping. The only problem is waiting, but tirerack is generally pretty quick about getting stuff out here to Hawaii.

with my LOUD exhaust i never can hear tire noise hahahaha. so that would also depend if your not running an exhaust or not. but like joey said these are not for everyone. and he is right you need to let us know what you are gonna do with these tires

Just a good DD handles good in the rain and those spirited turns...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but don't you have to replace both tires on the same diff if one of them goes? If the tread on one wheel is worn, and you put on a fresh tire on the opposite side wheel, won't that affect the diff because the diameters are different? Idk, that's what I just heard.

Also check out this chart for UHP tires.

Whatever you do, don't go to Lex Brodies in Waipahu. They scratched my old Gram Lights. Everyone suggests Auto Customs (behind the old Eurosport), so that's where I'm going when I get my rims.

All 4...well from the last time that I cared to check.

In terms of tire choice...I am going to try a set of the Hankook Ventus V12 Evo next time around. Currently on Bridgestone G-Force Sport but have used the various other "tires of note".

Of all of them, Dunlop Direzza Star Specs offer the best handling for the price. Though they really suck in DD even though you can run them as such. I'd rather have them on a race car that sees minimal street driving...kind of like Ty's STi whereas he drives it mostly for Auto-X and could run these if he no longer wanted to run r-comps (and not have to change at the track). This is the same for all those "close to r-comp tires".

I would stick to the UHP or Max Perf Summer Tires for HI. No need for All-Seasons as long as you get a good summer tire made to handle rain/water...well as long as you don't drive up the volcanoes to the observatories.

I'm going with the Hankooks because they have tested really well in the rain and that, to me, gives them more flexibility during the summer rather than worrying about rain.

We've had Hankook V12 Evo's on Leila's Forester for probably about 5k miles now and they're great tires. They grip pretty well, are quiet, and showing very minimal if any tread loss. I'd buy them again in a heart beat. Again, like Joey said, look at what's important to you and go from there. I spoke with my friend Jon @ Auto Customs and he highly recommends them too, so it was an easy choice

I had my RE11's since Dec 09 I run them at AutoX once at RallyX and daily drive them.
They still have plenty of tread left.

They are quieter than the federals i had previously and have a lot more grip. Even in the rain.

What I would do is check reviews, tirerack is a good place to start. Or search the forums on the different summer tires available now. At the time when I bought mine the re11's were reviewed as being top notch all around, I'm happy with my decision. At the time it was 732 + 135 shipping for the set of 4 I imagine they are more expensive now.

In the end it comes down to your budget and the type of driving you'll be doing.
