I maybe interested in getting a turbo Subie in the near future, but have been reading that some of you have been getting some reliability problems,..Mostly tranny problems,...Are Subies lemons? Or is it due to mods?
I know you cant drive a AWD car like you do a RWD as its too much stress on its components as I also own a AWD DSM,..so is all the reliability problems due to the ease of increased horsepower when you mod them and people racing at the track or high-rev take offs?
Or is anyone having problems with their cars with normal day-to day driving w/o any abuse? What kind of problems are everyone having???
Just curious and want to know the inside "word" about Subies before I put down any money,..
thanks
Kevin

the problems with the trannys in subies from what i understand is that they aren't meant for the increase in horsepower that some people throwing on. once you get into the high 200-300hp range it's pretty much a tough job for any tranny. i think most of the problems you hear about are from people who don't know how to drive an awd car. like the guy with the red wrx who let his honda friend drive his car. you can't rev to 5k and then pop the clutch unless you wanna see your tranny drop. normal driving and even spirited driving i think subies are very reliable, but every now and again there's bound to be a defect. thats why there is a waranty.
My WRX has given me no problems. I drive rather aggressively, but I never do 5000 rpm clutch dumps...that is just asking for something to go wrong. Treat the car right, and it will treat you right.

It would be my daily driver, but I would "spank it" once in a while like how it was built and made for,..but I would like to kbe reassured that the car could handle the occasional "spirited driving" once in a while without any complaints,..Ive autocrossed and dragged once in a while so Im accustomed to driving hard,...My current DSM has lasted me a long time for at least the first 6 yrs without any costly repairs and hope that a Subie wont give any "serious" complaints at least for the first 3-4 yrs (excluding "bad luck"),...
But just wondering cause I added some mods to my car and never really had problems till my timing belt broke (other than power steering fluid leaks) with a MB control, exhaust, etc and with stock clutch,..Now with way more speed parts I can see why people's trannys need rebuilds,...but on stock/mildly modded Subies,..
Can anyone with 3 yrs ownership share their reliability records?
thanks

Mine is fine other than this stupid electrical gremlin which was probably caused by the last owner!
40K miles and not a whimper. Tranny is a little tough to get into reverse but that will be solved by my next tranny fluid change (going synthetic). No mechanical probs whatsoever!
Oh and though you may spank your car...you should try humping it next LOL

Just drive it like you OWN it, not like you STOLE it! And most of all don't drive it like me!

the evo is so much better!
i mean have you seen fast and the furious?? you can drive in revearse on the freeway going 70mph.
actually i think subys are good cars. just don't do dumb things and you should be good. if you get the sti you don't have to worry about the tranny like the wrx owners do.

Subaru's are a great bang for the buck... look at the performance features of a wrx/sti vs other cars in the price range. Yeah so there's no leather, but hell you get turbo charged sweetness. There are peeps around on these boards running the stock wrx tranny over 350hp on these boards with no problems, just know what you're doing and don't clutch dump.
