Question for the computer savvy

Why won't my computer recognize my a video capture device? There's a conflict somewhere. How do I go about finding it?

What OS you runnin' again?

If it's Win2k+ try "msinfo32", if older Win - look in the device manager for yellow exclamation points or red stop signs (sounds like Lucky Charms doesn't it? )

What does it say when you hook it up? Does it ever detect the connection?

ME = much suck, but thats another discussion.

Um, wow, usb webcam. Did you install the drivers BEFORE plugging in the camera? I always forget and it causes issues. Easily solved tho.

If you did not install the drivers before plugging in the camera go to your Hardware Device Manager and look for the undected stuff. Think it has the question mark or something.
-Click and REMOVE the device, if there are multiple I usually remove them all.
-Unplug the camera.
-Install the drivers off the CD.
-Reboot.
-Once back in WindowsMuchSuck plug the camera in and you should be good.

If you plug the camera in before installing the drivers it sticks the camera in the undetected area and even if you install and install and install the drivers it doesnt help. You gotta remove the undetected deal first.

Let us know...

Is it a USB 2.0 webcam? If so you'll have to install the USB 2.0 drivers for it.

Check to see if the USB port is working, use a mouse to test.

I haven't actually had a bunch of problems with the ME. I've had it for a long time (since it first came out?) I don't think this has anything to do with anything, but suddenly both of my computers are having 'bad cluster' problems. I had like 30 bad clusters on my laptop, but still somehow got it back to working and now it's shot again. Won't boot. Goes as far as the WIN ME screen and just stops. I will say, I have had to reformat and reinstall windows many many more times on both of my computers vs. when I was using win98 se.

Anyhow, reference my camera, it worked on this computer before. I don't think it's 2.0 because I've had it for about 2 years. I suspect that it is in conflict with the software that comes with my soundcard (which was originally shipped with the computer). There are no conflicts when I go into system properties, except an unrelated PS/2 mouse (yellow exclamation).

As a matter of fact, I don't even see the camera in the properties. I'm gonna reinstall it, software first, and see what happens.
