Car Info: '97 Legacy 2.5GT sedan
I brought the Legacy there for a simple front wheel bearing job Tuesday morning. After having the car for a few hours they called me and tried to tell me nothing was wrong with it. I guess the rumbling/grinding noise when I turn the wheel to the right, the shudder I can feel in the whole car, the broken ABS sensor because hub moved so much that the ABS exciter ring hit the sensor, all that stuff was just my imagination.
I then insisted they look at it again. They called me back and said that the bearings were fine, but the outer race was spinning inside the spindle. Oh, and the other side was starting to do the same thing. Only $1000+ in parts + $400 for labor and I'll be good to go.
I told them thanks, but no thanks, I want to take it apart myself and look at this. I've never, ever heard of anyone experiencing such a failure, and frankly I don't see how they possibly could have supposedly diagnosed such a thing without completely disassembling the hub/bearing/spindle arrangement, which they didn't do.
So today I was at the West Loch Auto Hobby Shop and pulled the left front apart. Whaddya know, a bad wheel bearing! No signs of the obvious damage there would be if the outer race was actually spinning inside the spindle, as I expected there wouldn't be.
I would think based on what I discussed with them when I dropped the car off, and when I talked to them on the phone, that it was clear I had some idea of "how things work". I don't understand why they would try to feed me such a line of BS.
I'm not impressed.
