I hear ya.. This is going to destroy Genesis Coupe sales.. Now if Hyundai was smart, they'd come back with a much smaller Tiburon - and compete directly with the FT-86 (or whatever they call it). As far as looks are concerned, to me, this kills the GC - and I really like that car...

Looks like it's gonna start "NA", not Boosted.

2011 for Japan in Toyota badge
???? for Japan with a Suby Badge (with it's own styling cues)

maybe MY2012? for US?

Reading more from Car and Driver...
A base price in the $20,000 range is expected when the car hits the market in late 2011 and Naturally aspirated....

I think the Genesis Coupe may still be more enticing,...

No doubt though that the GC is larger (in all dimensions) than the FT-86 concept

Genesis size specs:
182.3 inches long with a 111.0-inch wheelbase
width: 73.4 inches
height: 54.3

FT-86 size specs:
163.8 inches long with a 101.2-inch wheelbase
width: 69.3
height: 49.6 inches

Am I the only one who believes this car still won't see the light of production? Toyotas too bothered building Prius' and that stupid wheelchair thing.

Give me a Fiat 500 Tributo Ferrari or Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde anyday of the week. I don't like the look of that thing at all. Heck, Id rather have the Honda CRZ.

Toyoda wouldn't make big public announcements regarding a drastic change in company direction with regards to bringing enthusiasts back to Toyota. It would be like shooting himself in the foot. He's made it clear that now that he has taken control of Toyota, he is making sure the "sporting, fun, performance" aspect that Toyota used to have will return. The fact that it's a 2+2, and the price range it's aiming for all fall in line with Toyota's history of offering performance for value. Just my 2c.

But that affordable sports history you speak of has been just that in recent years as far as Toyota, history. I do agree that Toyota needs something like the FT-86, but all I've heard up until the announcement of this car is "we dont want sporty, we want green". It seems as the Japanese car-makers in general are on a rabid green movement. Meanwhile the Koreans are trying to inject so fun into their lineups (Kia Forte Koup, Kia Soul, Hyundai Genesis to name a few). And the Europeans manage to keep it both fun and economical (VW Scirocco TDI, Fiat 500 Abarth).

I may not like the car, but I do think its a good injection of sport that the Japanese market so desperately needs. But like I've said early of this car, I'll believe it when I see it on the road in the metal.

However, I will admit the fact that they did a GT5 video is optimistic!

my god, if this thing was the new SVX that'd make sense too. it it's outfitted differently for japan, just means we'll have a lot of nice JDM parts to pickup, when/if we get this car in our hands.

i'm pretty glad it's not like the concept from years ago that looked like a celica.

Looks good,..
Sorta like a stretched out 350/370Z but with an ugly Buick like rear end?

Should be the 2.5L motor when it hits USDM and mod friendly as usual and be a lot of fun if its RWD...

This and registration being pricier for a 2.4l and above maybe why they are keeping it as a 2.0

USDM STi's would have never gotten a 2.5 liter if it wasn;t for emission laws and the number of Cats killing the power of the EJ20.
I thought the reason the JDM STi's came with 2.0L motors is because for Subaru to compete in the WRC, they have to produce a certain amount of cars that use the same sized 2.0L motor mandated in WRC?

That is correct. However, the reason why you never see the EJ207 here in the US is because of our tough emissions laws. The EJ207 is a much better block than the EJ257. Basically, you can think of the EJ257 as a motor based on the EJ207 but with thinner cylinder walls to get the difference in displacement. This is a good thing if you want base low end torque but you lose the thicker wall strength and less cooling.

I'd gladly take a JDM EJ207 over a USDM EJ257 anyday.
