Mystery CEL p0457
Ok so here's the scoop. i swapped in the VF34, 565cc injectors and walbro pump this weekend. the car runs great and idles silky smooth. ive put about 225 boost free miles on it since the swap to start breaking in the turbo without any hiccups. yesterday me and the wife took a road trip around the island to get some miles on the car and everything was fine until after we stopped for dinner. on the way back home the CEL came on. nothing seemed off so i drove home and checked it. the code popped up P0457 - Evaporative emission control system leak detected (fuel filler cap loose/off). to get the obvious out of the way, yes the gas cap is on tight and correctly. I've checked all over the engine bay and cant find any vacume/fuel/boost leaks. im gonna look into it more but if anyone knows anything feel free to speak up. thanks!

since you changed the fuel pump...double check the seal on the fuel pump...and other connectors around the fuel pump retaining to the evap system.
if all fails...you have to smoke test the evap system to find the leak.

i double checked all the solonoids and vac lines (including the one under the alternator) and everything seems good. i checked the fuel pump hoses and they are all good. i didnt want to take the whole pump out right now cause its a pain, but if the problem persists then i will. i drove around some more and didnt have the light come on today, but we'll see. i did however check the gas cap again and remembered that there was a small amount of fuel that had puddled outside the filler neck when i fueled up (which was right after the install) and was gone now. perhaps during my road trip it spilled into the little drain hole and triggered the cel and it happening after the install was mere coincidence. at any rate the car runs great so i dont think its anything to worry about. i'll keep ya posted.
yeah when the pump was replaced on my car, I had a CEL....I went to subaru Waipahu and got Ed(sub sonic) to check my car out and sure enough, it was the seal.....
sorry...havent worked on a subie yet....rofl
P0457 usually is a big evap leak....
A fuel tank pressure change less than a minus (-) 7 inches of H2 0 in 30 seconds has occurred after refueling; or there is excessive purge (fuel vapor) flow greater than 0.06 pounds per minute.
P0456
The PCM monitors the complete EVAP control system for the presence of a very small fuel vapor leak. The system failure occurs when a fuel vapor leak from an opening as small as 0.508 mm (0.020 inch) is detected by the EVAP running loss monitor test.

could be Mike, I'm not entirely sure-like I said Ed the mechanic at subaru Waipahu(when it was still there) did it for me.......I hope you figure it out....

anyone know how to do a smoke test or a better way to test for a leak? the code doesnt come on anymore, but i can smell fuel vapors. it doesnt seem to be comming from the engine bay and i can smell it inside the cockpit, even after the car has been sitting. i cant find any leaks and the car still runs fine. ive smelled around and it seems like it could be comming from the back of the car somewhere but again no leaks. i sniffed in the trunk and lifted up the lining and it smells normal around the fuel pump area and i checked the gas cap area and its fine as far as i can tell. it seems like it could be comming from under the right rear wheel well (say that ten times fast) around the canister area, but i cant see anything. im gonna go check into it more right now, but any suggestions would be appreciated.

the passenger side rear wheel area is where the gas overflow is. if you over fill the tank it'll drain out in the wheel well.

well, i did put gas in the car yesterday and took it for a drive which is when it started happening. i wonder if the sesor on the pump i usually use isnt very good and its filling the tank up too much... not sure why i would be able to smell it in the car tho when its been off with the windows up. the smell is definitly not comming from in the car and as far as i can tell not the engine bay either. thought it was maybe running too rich but i dont smell it in the exhaust and it wouldnt explain why it smells after its been off.
i just checked everything again and cant find the culprit. couldnt really smell anything except a very faint sent under the rear wheel. started the car up and let it run for a minute, still nothing. i know im **** and its probably nothing, but i dont want to be that guy who breaks something out of negligence either. im gonna take it for a spin and see if it does it again.....
