hmmm...

I've seen lots of different intakes on cars here on the island...

65mm APS CAI and short ram, GP Moto short ram, Injen CAI and short ram, Blitz short ram, SPT short ram, K&N Typhoon short ram, ARC induction box, AEM, ebay...etc...

On the whole, most will tell you that intakes will do nothing to help your stock or near stock motor...the stock box works great...some will get rid of the intake silencer referred to as the snorkel...some of the ill designed intakes will even cause your car to run lean...bad...

Like a lot of people have said, the stock box really does work well...for example, even the over the counter Cobb stage two maps are tuned for a TBE and K&N Dropin filter using the stock box...

My cousin runs the Injen CAI...it did not run so well and threw CEL's prior to getting a protune...once protuned...it was fine.

I had the GP moto short ram that worked just fine...no cels...I am currently running the 65mm APS CAI...which was designed to mimick the stock airbox characteristics...so no problem here with this either...the Cobb and SPT intakes also work without a tune...

Most people get a short ram or CAI to hear the induction noise and to hear their recirculating, 50/50 blow off valves better...unless your engine.turbo requires a bigger mouth to fill it's lungs...you would probably be better off using the stock box...

Phew....

Stay stock unless you're gonna go over 300hp on a WRX or unless you're getting an FMIC

Intakes

Hey Knate. +1 for the APS 65mm CAI. I have one on my wagon and honestly never really felt a difference in power. In theory it's great, and maybe later when my Protune comes along, it may help out, but at this point, it's only a sound/looks thing. Does look cool and sounds pretty sweet.

Here's the deal. A bunch of folks will tell you a CAI is bad juju, but they don't have a wideband O2 sensor to back up the "you'll run lean" theory. If you run a FMIC you don't have a choice, you need something other than stock. I had an AEM and it didn't run lean, even with my FMIC. I have the 70mm APS (old school) CAI and put down 292 whp, 297 wtq on pump (93) and 324 whp, 338 wtq (half 93/half 117). Very safe A/F ratios. If you're sticking with a TMIC the stock intake is fine. If you go with a FMIC you'll need something else. I ran the stock turbo, AEM CAI, equal-length headers and catless TBE and was faster than stage IV WRXs and STIs at the track the first time I raced. A/F ratios under boost were 11's or low 12's. I now have a knocklink indicator in addition to the wideband. I also have and EGT gauge but I personally don't think you can "tune" via an EGT gauge. Just my opinion.

stock is fine, or a drop in for the average to mild build. It would help if you got a tune though.

I ran a K&N drop in filter with the snorkus delete thingiemabob...it was fine.

Only time I would think of running an aftermarket intake is on an FMIC equipped setup (you have to).

You should check the dealer price just in case for that stock part you need...most guys on here will end up keeping that part because they will go back to stock before selling their cars.

Just had my FMIC installed by Ryan...

Awesome...I'm running the 65mm APS CAI and with the APS FMIC tubing...works perfect together...

Ryan custom fabricated brackets and such to make my FMIC work...wow, what a work of art man...He and his crew are masters!!!

now comes my turn....to clean up my engine bay...that TMIC really hides a lot of dirt...argh.....heh heh...
