How are these different

I can see the color and design differences

These are Gramlights
$975

These are Volk TE-37's
$1839

Is there a significant weight difference? Is there a quality difference? Are the Volks forged and the Gramlights not? I'm trying to figure out why one set is 2x as much as the others.
edit: The reason I'm asking is that I was under the (apparently) mistaken impression that Gram-lights and Volks were one in the same with different badges.

Gramlight Regulars are not forged. The Gramlight Pro 57's are forged but are way more expensive. Thats why regular Gramlights are inexpensive.

Forged? still don't understand this terminology!

1.

Forged wheels - are made out of one hunk of metal and the stuff is cut away.

Cast wheels - are hot liquid metal put in to a mold.

Forged are stronger and sometimes lighter but not always.

2.

Volk wheels and gramlights are brands or trim levels of Rays wheels.

Ah ha! I knew it. That is what confused me.

So would the gramlights pictured above be worth it? (not the Pro's) or, if I'm not going to buy REALLY expensive rims, just get some decent Rotas?

I love all the gramlights. The gramlights rock because you get a little "import bling" and a high quaility cheap wheel.

Close. Actually, the forging process uses pressure to shape the wheels. This process creates a denser metal, therefor less material is needed to provide the same strength (vs. a cast wheel). As less material is needed, the forged rim will be lighter.

• FORGED OR SEMI-SOLID FORGED

The ultimate in one-piece wheels. Forging is the process of forcing a solid billet of aluminum between the forging dies under an extreme amount of pressure. This creates a finished product that is very dense, very strong and therefore can be very light. The costs of tooling, development, equipment, etc., make this type of wheel very exclusive and usually demand a high price in the aftermarket. Semi-solid forging (SSF) is a process that heats a billet of special alloy to an almost liquid state and then the aluminum is forced into a mold at a very high rate. The finished product offers mechanical properties very similar to a forged wheel without the high production and tooling costs of a forged wheel.

forged wheels, computer numerically controlled (CNC) mills add the cosmetics and the bolt circle to exacting tolerances.
