how to get into autocrossing?

I always wanted to try it, can someone explain how to start.
types of car class, fees, mandatory safety equipment needed besides helmet and seatbelts.
I have an 04 sti with intake, blowoff, downpipe, exhaust (catless). what class would i fall on?
also any opinion if it is just a waste of time and money based on your experiences.
thanks!

Where? (I'm in NorCal - Redwood City).

How much?

What do you need to bring?

(Sorry for all the questions).

You, my friend, are in the wrong section, but as far as you would go, you have your choices. UFO or SCCA. UFO on Saturday at Marina and SCCA on Sunday at Atwater. After that, the next event is either Monster or Oakland at the beginning of December.

So... for a few notes for you.

1. Don't worry about class. Since you are catless, I think that bumps you up Street Mod. Doesn't really matter though. Just talk to the people there and they'll help you classify. You won't be winning any classes or anything. Just go out there and have fun.

2. As for safety and tech inspection goes, you should have some thread on your tires. You don't need a lot, just some. You want to be safe. Your stock seat belt will be fine. You shouldn't be leaking any fluids and there shouldn't be anything loose in your engine bay or trunk or even in the cabin.

3. Just go out there and have fun. Come a little early and just grab someone randomly or go to the registration desk and tell them that you are brand new to auto-x'ing and that you have no idea what to do. I am sure they'll have someone give you a crash course and ride along with you to help you with navigating the course.

Auto-x'ing is awesome. You'll have a lot of fun. It is expensive though, but well worth the money.

Actually the BOV is what really puts him into SM (sreet mod class). I'm in that class in a wrx.

Since he's a neewbie (1st timer), he needs to show up early in the morning. Maybe 6:45-7:00. They will let you sign up at 7, but if there is a line, as there has been recently, it's 1st come 1st served. Next sunday. If i were you, I'/d either take the bov off, and run in a much lower class, or mod to hell (i think it may be tough if you're on a college student budget). One of the huge differences in racing you will find is the quality of tires. Grip is very important. But for your 1st time, just go out and get a feel for the course.

It's amazing to me how a poor college student can afford the STI. I know i could'nt, with the costs of tuition and books, etc. But then again, my car's paid off. Insurance must be high for you. I know i pay $200 a month for my 2 subies. I'm not hating, but racing is expensive. As they say, you gotta pay to play. If $h!t breaks, you gotta fix it. Most people don't gotta worry about that. This ain't the 1/4 mile luckily.
Well, hopefully we will see you on the 25th of November!! 'Come by and say hello.

Oh yeah, bring a checkbook, a helmet that is snell rated 2000 (or you can rent one from them), shoes, and lots of water and some food and drinks. Bring a roll of masking tape for your class numbers, or shoe polish, yourself and your ride. That's it, the rest will fall into place. Hope this helps!!

Shouldn't worry about your class until you become competitive and commited to winning a class.

Then you can shape your mods to the class...but for the time being just go out, have fun and learn to drive.

My personal philosophy is to mod my car for my personal tastes rather than to stick to an Auto-x class as it will just drive me crazy and I am in no way fooling myself that I am a national competitor.

Don't worry, that was me during the last auto-x session 10/21! I know people were asking who's that in the Leggy & what in the world is he doing running in EM? I had the same thoughts though... why does it matter what class I run in, I ain't gonna place anyway.

I really didn't know what to expect coming in & set some very modest goals for myself.... finish each run & try to improve each time. Oh, and try not to kill anyone (myself included). I guess it's hard not to improve with each run when you drive like an old geezer like I did... but you gotta start somewhere!

Go early like 808subaru suggested and make sure to walk the course as many times as you can to get a good idea of what to expect. Try to meet the other Suby guys & absorb as much as you can.

I can't make it to the next session 11/25 due to medical reasons.... but hopefully the next one after that.

Good luck & have fun...

Im hoping to learn more about my car, and more about my abilities to drive my baby, or lack thereof.
If u guys see me,drop by, I have a white 04 sti, stock with blitz nurspec, and you can tell its a nurspec thanks to the massive burn on my rear bumper.

one last thing, is it a good idea to bring a tent for shade, and does is cost to bring 1 person(hah, motivational support)
