Thats horrible... they really need to do something about the potholes. Pretty soon, our roads will look as horrendous as the roads in the countryside of China if they dont fix them up

The city should just eat the cost of future repairs and go all concrete on their main roads. It's just investing in the future. Look at the Autobahn and our freeways. One of the reasons that places don't use concrete because it's prone to frost damage. Yeah like we get snow here.

As I mentioned in the other thread, if road quality is important to you, you HAVE to tell your legislators. That doesn't guarantee that something will be done right away, but for sure, if no one says anything, your elected officials won't make it a priority.

Money is very short for road maintenance. The federal government just took away over $15 million in funds from the DOT and State funding for road repairs hasn't really gone up over the years. To make matters worse, the price of ashpalt has gone up 4 or 5 times over the last few years. A ton of asphalt cement for paving used to cost around $60, the current price is about $260, with no end in site. To put that into perspective, to repave a mile of 2-lane highway takes about 2,000 tons of asphalt cement, so you can see how the price increase makes a huge impact.

As mentioned above, Portland cement concrete (PCC) is an option, but has a few drawbacks. First off, it is still more expensive than asphalt cement. Secondly, it tends to be noisier than an asphalt surface, which makes a difference to those that live close to the highway. The biggest problem though, is that PCC takes time to cure, on the order of half a day. This is not a huge issue in the mainland, where there are many alternate routes, allowing roads to be closed for an extended period to let the PCC cure. Here, however, it is nearly impossible to completely close a road for the installation of PCC - even a partial closure has a huge impact on traffic and may not be sufficient as the vibration caused by cars passing too close to the freshly poured concrete may affect the curing.

Someone here should create a form letter that i-clubbers can download and edit to add their name and the name(s) of their legislators. The letter can cite the problems discussed in this thread and respectfully request that more funding be allotted for road repair and maintenance.

Venting here, though interesting to read and a good outlet, will not get the problem solved.
