Help Save Oahu's Only Race Track - Hawaii Race Way Park

Subject: HELP SAVE OAHU'S ONLY RACE TRACK - HAWAII RACE WAY PARK
Body: COPY PAST THIS ON BULLETINS

Presidents' Day Motorsports and Car Enthusiast Cruise

When and where?
Presidents' Day, Monday, February 21, 2005, from 12 noon to 2pm or 3pm. Cruise past the State Capitol Building to represent the local motorsports and car enthusiast community. A map of a suggested route will be available later.

A few legislators and the local media will be there.

Who's invited?
Everyone who has anything to do with the local motorsports or car enthusiast scene. Participants, enthusiasts, supporters, people in the automotive business, promoters, automotive marketing -- anyone involved in one way or another.

We would like to have thousands of people there riding their bikes, driving their street rods, cruise cars, family cars or hot rods, or trailoring their race cars around the capitol that day, very orderly, with dignity and respect. We especially want the people who normally don't come out for an event like this to show their support -- older enthusiasts, busy professionals and families. If you want to bring a car full of people who would enjoy walking around the capitol, that would be welcome also.

What's this cruise for?
We need show our legislators how large and diverse the local motorsports and car enthusiast community really is. The people we voted into office are making decisions that are bad for our community because many of them consider us a small and insignificant part of the population.

It is important that we show them how large a community we represent. It is important they understand that local motorsports fans are responsible citizens who come in all ages, all professions and all walks of life. The strength of our numbers can be represented with a large turnout of cars cruising past the State Capitol Building. Our diverse interests can be represented with the various types and styles of vehicles we drive.

Politicians only want to please voters. It's how they keep their jobs. If they realize how many motorsports fans there are, they will realize that if they don't support us, they will lose A LOT of votes.

Why is this so important now?
We are at risk of losing our race track. The land that Hawaii Raceway Park sits on is owned by Campbell Estate, and the lease is up in 2006. The Estate wants the land back, and our State government has little to no interest in helping us build a new track or helping us keep the existing one. Think about that, folks. That would leave us WITHOUT A RACE TRACK, and our government DOESN'T CARE.

Looking beyond the immediate problem of losing our race track, demonstrating the size and diversity of our community has other benefits. We would stand a much better chance of changing unpopular laws like recon, for example. A long line of diverse rides crusing with dignity and respect will also help our image after a lot of bad publicity by a few bad apples in our bunch.

How will the cruise be organized?
We are not organizing one gigantic cruise. We are encouraging local car clubs, businesses, organizations, groups of friends and individual enthusiasts to take some time out of their Presidents' Day holiday to cruise past the State Capitol Building between 12 noon and 2pm that day.

We will make a map of a suggested cruise route and make it available sometime in the very near future.

Why pick a holiday when our legislators will not be there?
It is not necessary for our legislators to be there. What matters most is how many cars and people show up. The media will be there covering the event, so our legislators will see it when they watch the news that evening or read about it in the newspaper the next morning.

If we did this during a normal working day, we would create a huge traffic jam and the public would hate us. We need to do this with respect for the other drivers and not create a problem.

Aloha and Mahalo,

Michael T. Oakland

Latest News Regarding the Future of HMC!
1/02/05 - WLO/TAC Hearing for HB 994 is being heard this Friday at 1:45 in Rm 329 at the capitol. The committee chairs are Representative Kanoho (WLO) and Representative Chang (TAC). It is vital that we send and show our support for this bill. If you can show up, if you can't send testimony. Do both if you can.

If you do decide to submit testimony, you must include the hearing date, time, and committees so the clerks can get your info to the right people. Every bit of your support helps!
