Er, how do you get lost in Volcanoes for FIVE days?
Now, not like I'm an expert hiker or have tromped all over the place out there, but wouldn't you have to walk in circles for a LONG TIME to not get out of there in 5 days?
WAIMEA, Hawaii (AP) -- A hiker lost for five days in a lava field near a volcano says he survived by drinking water he squeezed from moss in a mostly barren landscape.
....
Gaedcke said he crawled beneath the vines and lick moisture off leaves. Then he found moss growing on trees, and was able to squeeze enough water from it to drink.

Perhaps not going out at night, by yourself, in obviously an environment that you have no idea what to do in.
This fool had a car and drove it to the lava field and walked in. Then he lost his car...what a tool. Look at the picture...someone make an pwn3d picture and send it to him.
Saddest thing is that he didn't bring a cell phone or think to try clicking his horn button on his key fob (assuming he had a rental car).

I don't know if you guys have ever done land nav, but you can get lost pretty easily. You have a predisposition to walk in circles. I would have at least marked the land by stacking rocks up, but it is not hard to get lost and once your lost walking in continuous cirlces is not far away.
My g/f and I went to visit some friends last night, and one of them met this dude pretty much right before he took off on his trek. They said he flagged them down on the red road and in a real goofy southern accent asked them 'where yuh can meet some wimmin' and they were like WTF??? Then he asked if this retreat place down there was 'for gays' and some other stuff. They were laughing about it because he came home days ago and said "you shoulda seen this tool we saw down on the red road..." and then yesterday on the news he's all "theres that doofus" who in fact is called Dewey... It's amazing to me sometimes what some people think is a good idea.

I think even sadder is how he climbed to the 1500ft level in search of his car after being pretty near the shore.
