Cars in Hawaii and Rust

Hey Guys,

Just wondering how the cars fare out there w/ all the salt air. I know the coastal cities out here play murder on the car. How is it out Hawaii?

It's not that bad if you dont live next to the Ocean. Like in Central Oahu or in Town/Mililani side, I never had a problem with any of my cars....then again, out of all my cars, the longest I kept one was 2 years.

we have a 94 toyota pickup and a 96 toyota 4runner, they both have some minor rust spots, very minor like surface rust on a scratch and what not... both driven mostly in honolulu, not much at the beaches.

Werd. I have never had rust on any of my cars...ever. One of them was 20 years old. Then again, I was my car like every other day. I hate dirt/waterspots.

depends on manufacturer and paint quality.

hawaii in general has the worst of everything with the exception of salted bridges. in the mainland you have the luxury of having certain seasons where the weather is not beating on your car.

here in hawaii we have constant rain, humidity, 85 degree temperatures(year round) salt spray from the ocean, and sometimes vog. on oahu fall-out is more common than most islands.... its because we have the highest congestion- so brake dust is so common in the make up of fallout- combine that with all the body shops and pearl harbor area.

from what i gather the average lifespan of most cars here is roughly about 5-7 years before rust begins to take its toll. if not on the body then on the hinges and/or undercarriage. (if anything call some bodyshops-they might have more insight)

if you are mainly concerned with just body... i say get a paint sealant like rejex or something from ACS. waxes don't offer you protection from fall-out and contaminants that hurt your cars life in terms of rust.

k enough i too potogee.
hope that helps.

I dont think the conditions here are to blame for your clear coat problems after only a year I'd bet it has more to do with special "circumstances" and car care.

wax does nothing to protect your car from fall out. you need something that will keep the elements from penetrating the finish. in reality there is nothing guaranteed against fallout... just make sure that you don't let it fester in your paint- because it will enlarge and form microscopic craters in your finish(trapping wax when u polish it) white cars aren't an issue with wax.. but the fallout when rusty shows big time!

no problems on any of my cars. then again i take care of them.

ive seen 97 and newer cars from the mainland....scary. suspensions and frames just look lik ethey are going to fall apart. my 91 s10 has the normal surface rust underneith....but its superficial. my VR4 only has rust on the exhaust...even the nuts and bolts are nice.

My old car was 9 years old when I got rid of it, parked outside in the sun 2 miles from the ocean every week Mon-Fri, and it had very very minor speckle rust spots (probably from rock chips). It's not THAT bad, considering it's an island surrounded by salt water. I've seen alot worse where I'm from, and although it's not perfect here, it's a small price to pay for being surrounded by beaches.
