bad things and me.

So I took my car to the Subaru shop about 2-3 months ago to have all the fluids changed and get a checkup done etc.

paid $777 for this to all get done because it was supposed to be a complete checkup and change of pretty much everything.

well after putting some new stuff on my car today I just thought I'd check the dip and found there was almost no oil in the car at all, like literally nothing on the dip. I had 2 friends check it to make sure it wasn't just me.

so i went to checker, got oil, some stands and a temp filter since it was late in the afternoon and found that the oilpans bolt was torqued on as was the oil filter so I was not able to remove those, so we just put oil in and checked the dip and saw that only the oil we put in showed up on the dip.

so I have a few more questions.

I was told there are probably metallic shavings in any oil that may or may not have been in the car prior to us adding more oil.

-- is there any way to check via a magnet or something if there is any metal residue left in there?

second question, without leaking oil, or anything abnormal coming out of the exhaust, is there someplace this oil may have gone? since they torqued the filter and bolt on there so tight, nothing was getting out of either, I had some pretty beast people try to twist it off.

1. If it doesn't register on the dipstick I'm guessing you were atleast 3/4 to a quart low. Was the oil light on your dash on? I'm guessing they didn't change your gasket on the oil filter.

2. My car used to burn (read:evaporate) oil in between changes, up to a quart even. That's when i decided to change the oil filter gasket every oil change, but i believe you can get away with every other change.
Since then, no issues.

Hope this helps.

change the oil filter gasket?

the filters when u buy them have a new gasket on them.

my car eats a little bit of oil too, about one quart at max between changes. almost all turbocharged cars do.

Yeah what gasket? Do you mean the crush gasket for the oil drain plug?

Yeah burning/evaporating oil is nothing new to a Subaru or most any turbocharged car...that's why we have to check more regularly and many of us use catch cans.

didnt realize the oil evaporated, i never noticed it on my 02.

the suby shop torqued the oil pan bolt down as well as the oil filter so hard that 4 different people were not able to remove them.

my cars up on stands right now, just lettin it cool down a bit then going to try to remove the parts again.

Yup subaru service dept. torques that crap alright. My first oil change took me almost 8 hours (and 3 or 4 trips to checkers to grab different wrenches) to get the stupid filter off.
