I think shaft play you can tell but leaks, well I would go to a professional.

Ask Richard about the guys who checked on his VF30, they probably can help.

The "man with the plan" doesn't work there anymore. He was pretty much the "performance" turbo guy.

Don't know where else to look.

What type of turbo is it? There's really only one way of finding out - and that's bolting it on!

Axial play is to be expected (just a tiny bit) but anything lateral is cause for worry.

Smell the center section - see if it's burnt, look for heat checking/cracks/chips, etc., see if the compressor and turbine housing bores are smooth, other than that you have to bolt it on and pray!

I bought a VF23 with ~5K on it for $350. It was supposedly inspected by a Subaru mechanic, but I'm going to take that with a grain of salt. Oh well, I was hoping to get a good idea of the turbo's condition before bolting it on.

If it does start smoking (knocks on wood), Jack over at iON said that he could "hybridize" it.

Thanks Richard!

Are there any places on island that have any clue about turbos?

Propulsion Control Engineering is a shop in Halawa industrial whose business is turbochargers... Almost exclusively for the industrial/diesel/equipment market however...

Nobody local that I found (called ALL the shops) is able to source parts for and/or rebuild IHI turbochargers.

It's the reason I don't want an IHI turbo again (but will probably have to settle for).
