With BMW throwing their gauntlet into the sports compact $30k~ market, this makes it very hard for alot of people to choose next year in that segment. Having a twin turbo I-6 335i engine in a small lil body is pretty impressive though. I think I'll wait and see how it's going to be priced when it comes out soon.
I think my bottom line for these is
AWD vs RWD
Saloon/Hatch vs Coupe

the 335i has so much freaking power its nuts... i believe the 335i is head to head with the current M3. a lil rumor my co worker told be was that the 335i is actually more powerfull than the M3 but they didnt want to say that on the spec sheets. the 335i is so nuts tho, no turbo lag at all, instant power!! stock suspension is very tight, steering is very tight. bmws have the option of active steering which is a variable ratio steering rack that ajusts according to the speed of the vehicle.. i could only imagine all of that in a little 135i, it will be great with the looks. i miss driving them bmws at work lol.....
ummm i dunno about the new sti, looks really ugly im my opinion...

Actually, the E46 M3 could still beat the E92 335i in the 0-60 and the 1/4 mile.
The E46 M3 has a much higher redline still, and it's still over 100 lbs lighter than a manual tranny 335i coupe. In the numbers game, the E46 M3 also has a higher displacement engine (by about 200cc) and higher horsepower rating. The E92 335i has higher torque though.
An E46 M3 runs 0-60 in 4.8 seconds and 1/4 mile in 13.1 seconds.
An E92 335i runs 0-60 in 5.1 seconds and 1/4 mile in 13.7 seconds.
And in the end, the M3's still a M while the 335i isn't.
Power isn't the only thing that makes the M name.
Handling, Weight Reduction, Braking, Styling...
I used to have an E46 325i with coilovers, front and rear sway bars, front and rear strut bars... The handling was good, but still didn't compare to my E46 M3 in stock form (Well... probably because all Ms come with a LSD too...). The 335i runs an open differential.
But if power is the only thing you care about... then that N54B30 engine is the one for you. I heard with just a simple software tune, you can easily get over 50 bhp and 50 ft/lbs torque. You will probably need more rubber on the rears since I heard the torque on this car is massive... like Mercedes Massive!
But, back on topic. I'd pick the 135i over the STi just because the Impreza looks like a Ford Focus now, kinda... Well, I don't particularly care for the 135i styling either... but as they say, "the lesser of two evils."

not liking either i'd go with the sti only for the ease of modification and maintinence. big $$ to mod a BMW. sti would be able to toast it with a lil $ compared to the BMW. not to mention i dought there will be many aftermarket options avail for the BMW. so in my book sti wins, and while they both look pretty bad, the sti is slightly easier to stomach.

BMWs are actually the highest modded Euro car and Audi comes next.
There's a whole lot of mods that already have come out for the N54B30 engine.
Supersprint, Technik engineering, Vishnu, Turner Motorsport, Dinan, Eisenhaus, etc...
But, you're right about one thing... it is quite damn expensive!
An Eisenhaus titanium catback exhaust for my M3 cost $4500, Brembo brakes are $7000, D/A intake is $4000, HRE wheels are $7500, etc... etc... etc...

well at this point I kinda like the styling of the new evo. It's not that I don't like the way the STi looks, I just personally don't like hatches. I know they are moving to the way "traditional" rally cars are from other manufacturers. But they really put some FUGLY rear lights on the car.
