Post K & N Apollo

I have a 2009 Subaru Impreza 2.5i and recently got a K & N apollo CAI and installed it into my car. The whole car would shut off on start up, but once MAF sensor was removed the car would start and run better than before. Currently got CEL on, tract light and cruise control on. Does car need ECU reset or should it be needing a tune or get aftermarket MAF sensor.? Codes read are PO102, and PO113. Thank's!!

The car needs the stock airbox back.

PO102 makes sense. You removed the MAF. The PO113 is weird. It's reading that the intake air is too cold. The sensor may be damaged.

The MAF is necessary for the engine to run correctly. It gauges how much air is entering the intake. When the ECU knows how much air there is, it can send the appropriate amount of fuel to the injectors. With the MAF removed, it would see almost no airflow causing the ECU to send minimum amounts of fuel. This would be a lean AFR. Running lean can cause some pretty wicked damage to the engine.

The MAF is designed to work best with the airflow through the stock air box. Getting a cone filter will change that airflow and cause the MAF to gather incorrect data which will lead to incorrect fueling.

You can try tuning the ECU for a cone filter. Resetting the ECU is not tuning.

Try a hybrid intake with the stock box and a little ingenuity... alot of guys run the hybrid and notice minimal gain but it looks kinda cool and a tune would help

I have a hybrid pipe. With the stock filter, there wasn't much change. When I put in the Apexi panel filter, there were noticeable gains.

How much was your apex filter and how much of a gain? I'm thinking about doing the hybrid with the k&n filter I have in there now which I hear isn't as good as the stock paper filter

I don't have proven gains. But there's noticeably more top end and more induction sound.

The thing that got my about the K&N is that it's an oiled filter and it lets some of the oil through which can get on the MAF and skew readings.

I also found this comparison.

2 | MKIV.com

Granted that comparison is on a Supra. But I figure that these companies would use the same filtering media on all of their filters. So the data could be applied for other cars.
