Well, my insight is most likely uh...how would you say...extremely LIMITED in this area, hahaha. My 2.5i is the only stick shift car that I've ever owned, and I'm still trying to learn how to drive it properly. I've driven quite a few BMW's and Honda's though, as well as a couple Toyota's (namely a Tercel and a Tacoma 2-door 5-speed), and they all seemed to have much longer throws than my 09. Maybe there is a difference between shifters amongst Impreza's, but I don't know.

I got a 09 premium so my car came with the stock STI short throw. id say the throw is decent. i have no complaints about it, but i'd probably change it in the future when i have money to throw around and get a kartboy short throw.

i have that but it doesnt seem short though. I know it is shorter then the actual stock shifter but I was wondering if any other shifters are interchangeable.

Seems like a good combo to go with an STI short throw then add an aftermarket stick on the STI linkage.

I have an 09 WRX that came with the STI short throw and it was pretty loose. Just added the Kartboy bushings and it's amazing how much tighter it is. If you already have the ss I would try the bushings first. There's two sets and I think that's all you'd need. A little more vibration comes thru but well worth it.

Keep in mind that short shifters don't just shorten the length of the shifter, but they also shorten the throw. They do this by lengthening the part of the shifter below the fulcrum. So simply shortening the stock shifter would not shorten the throw as much as a true short shifter. I have the Kartboy SS and front bushing on my 03 and love it.

Also, Cobb makes (or at least use to make) an SS that let you adjust both throw and length. This is great for true racers who would normally choose the longest lenth and shortest throw. Keep in mind that the closer the shifter is to the steering wheel, the better. Think about the crazy long hand brake rally drivers have.
