bad things from the forester

Ok,

I was driving along, and suddenly the foresters check engine light came on, along with the cruse control light flashing. I pulled over engine was not running. Codes were a 1544(high exhaust temp detected) and another that was one I can not remember but made reference to "exhaust manifold temp too high"

Now had it towed home, cleared the ECU, and it won't start. It trys, it kinda hints at it, even catches once in a while and bumps along for a second or two but then nothing.

Bigger concern, the timing belt cover on the left side is now cracked in 3 places, it was not cracked last time I looked and that was about a month ago.

HELP!!!!!!!!!

Oh ****...that does not sound good.
After resetting the ecu, it does take longer for the engine to light off.
