I don't know what could have caused your problem, I had a 98 Forester and drove it in the 2000 Alcan Winter Rally, my ex bought it off the lease and still drives it, now up to about 80,000 miles and its been relativly trouble free.
I bought a WRX in May of '01 and its still running strong at 135,000 miles.
Whatever the problem was with your Forester, I don't think it's a widespread issue.... I'm curious to hear more about your case.

98 Forester Problems
I don't know what caused my problem. It started with an oil leak and they told me to wait until I was due to change my timing belt (60,000 miles) but I noticed that it was leaking more (I had to add a quart in a month) so I took it in again and that is when they told me the bad news. They tacked on a list of other problems along with poking a hole in my radiator by accident and told me that they didn't know why this happened. I did all required maintance and took very good care of my car. I called Subaru of America and they said that they were sorry but they could not help. My question is this...I did all the research before buying my Forester, kept up the maintance and only had 54,000 miles....why did this happen and why wouldn't Subaru help me with this problem? Thank you for responding to my post.

between the price they charged and the fact that they messed up your radiator doing the job, I'd be wondering if you have the best dealership service there abouts, but then again... where are you located?
It sounds like they took something of a "shotgun" approach to fixing the oil leak, (I sure hope it isn't dripping anymore!) Somebody would have had to have done something really silly to make all that stuff go bad, but they must have figured it was the only way they could be sure to solve the leak.
You said you've had nothing but problems.... whay kinds of other problems?
Not that I can do much to help, but I am curious, being on my 3rd Subaru and finding they have all been far more reliable than any other cars I've owned.

hmm.
i have a 1998 forester and i have had no problems what so ever. i'm at 59,423 miles and it's trouble-free. i'm just now starting to look into modifying it and making more horsepower.
sorry to hear about your problem man. what other problems have you been having? Oops. my mistake. my radio won't work. that's my only problem...
