Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

It's not really the filter that's the problem, it's the fact it is a 'short ram' intake. It pulls hot air into the engine instead of cold outside air. Cancel if you can and buy a true cold air intake if you must have one.

It is easily the worst N/A Impreza intake made. You loose alot of torque and dont gain much in return. Most of the J-bend style intakes have this problem though, but the Weapon-R's cheap construction magnifies its problems.

The best RS intakes are the COBB, Ganzflow style intake (or PDM) with custom 3" airbox mod, and the Injen full intake that goes into the fender well. The "ram-air" style intake utilizing the functionless hood scoops on the GC's also works too.

The rest just suck hot air, literally.

I have a crapy JDM short ram intake and it sux. I just ordered the COBB and can't wiat. Hood scoop or no hood scoop a short ram intake is going to take in much hotter air than a true cold air going into the fender well. Thats the only way you'll get real "fresh air."
However, the other problem with the cheaper intakes is the way the are mounted, especially considering the MAF sensors. Since they don't use the basic 4-legged spider design on the manifold the intake bounces and rattles like hell at high RPM's. This cause turbulance in the intake and the sensors don't work well when there being slamed around, obviously. This sends incorrect info from the MAF sensore to the ECU actually restricting air at higher RPM's. This kills top end pick up with the intake. Just cough up the money and get a decent intake. You'll be happy in the long run.

Wrong. Doesn't work that way. Scoop or no, the filter is still pulling in hot air that flowed through the radiator and condenser.

Well i am probably going to get the ram air induction connection, it connects on to the end of the filter and it has a flexible hose with a plastic piece where the fresh air goes into, and you can mount it anywhere.
But if anyone wants to see dyno tests for the weapon r that show it gives more of a gain than most systems here it is.

That's a useless link. Honda motors are polar opposites of Subaru motors. And that's still a slow *** car.

Would a decent heat-shield solve the hot air problem of the ram air intake?

No. There are some semi-custom airboxes that force the filter to draw air through the right side small hood vent, but just a heat shield won't do it. It's not relly the radiant heat off the motor that's the problem, it's the air blowing through the radiator, which fills the whole engine compartment.

Heat shield where? With the Cobb, all the air that reaches the engine came from outside the engine compartment. The outside air doesn't need shielding.
