thinking about a impreza project car.....
Well ive always liked the older pre 2000(or is it 2002?whatever) imprezas. I swear a while ago i saw one that said WRX.
Anyways i wanna make an AWD project car, and i dont wanna do sumthing thats been done 1 million times(anything dsm). I like the way the older imprezas look, now how much potential do these really have? What model/engine do i want L, LX, 2.5RS(did i forget any?). Did any come turbo? What kinda perf mods are available or turbo kits?
Basically my plans are to totally strip the car, use it for drag and autoX(maybe eventually rally
). Its not gonna be a daily driver at all. SO what do i want. BTW, im on a budget, but who isnt?
Oh yea, i want a coupe.

You are looking for a pre-2002 Impreza. There are plenty out there that say WRX on the back of them, but none sold in the US. None of them came with a turbo from the factory. There were 1.8 liter ones, 2.2 liter ones and the 2.5RS. The "best" one for you depends on what you want to do. All three of these motors were open deck, so you will only be able to use low ammounts of boost on any of these motors. If you plan on turbo-ing any of them, though, you might as well go for the 2.5RS (only sold 98-2001 in that body style).
The good news (well, sort of good news) is that pretty much any Subaru engine will bolt into the older Impreza chasis. A WRX engine, an STi engine, an old Legacy Turbo engine, JDM WRX engines... plenty of options. The downside, of course, being cost.
Oh, and some of the earlier Impreza's (93-95ish) were available in FWD, so if you are buying an older one, make sure you verify that you are getting an AWD Impreza.

Talk to the folks at I-Speed for recommendations. They specialize in engine swaps and whatnot.

Car Info: 95 Impreza coup, green, 5speed 1.8l awd
with full interior 2800
without interior 2600
making a good guess because my 95AWD 1.8 5sp coup with less than half a tank and lots of crap in it weights 2720(without driver)
