Is there anyway to quiet down an air intake on an EJ25??????????

I bought a CHEAP air intake off of ebay a few weeks ago. It is nothing more than a simple pipe that curves around so the cone will rest facing the fender. The intake seemed to help out in the high RPMs but the trade off for that was an extremely high pitched and annoying sound. Infact from about 4-4.5k it is louder and more annoying as it reaches it's rev limiter. I put up with it for a while but one day on my way to work I had to hit WOT to get through an intercection before the light changed. The next thing I knew, the high pitched sound not only attracted the attention of the people walking along the side of the road but also that of an a-hole in a firebird that must have thought I was some 16 year old that thought his import was the fastest thing in the world. Then at the next light the guy wanted to race.

The following day I took off the intake and put the stock back on.
I still plan on putting a full exhaust on my 01 Legacy and a few other things, but I still would like to get rid of the horrible factory air intake.

Is there any way to quiet my intake down so it wont attract so much attention? Or is there an intake that isnt so noisy at WOT?

well I have the rallitek intake on my legacy and has had no issues with those types of noises but here is my advice.

-try a new cone filter for the end of your intake, the noise might be from the filter (I dont know you didnt really give a good description of the noise other than annoying)

-your other option is to keep the stock intake system, which is actually fairly sufficient and just use a K&N or Perrin panel filter.

I'm not sure why you are getting a high pitched noise. I just put an AEM short ram on my 03 TS and it seems to amplify the engine noise but no high pitched other than a small leak around the air sensor (which I am going to fix). Pretty quiet till 3k, then 4-6k it's loud but sounds kinda like a performance exhaust system.

Sell that crap, then get a gansflow with an amsoil filter in your airbox. Then if its too loud, dynamat the outside of it.

ok, so I've kindof changed my opinion... this weekend I drove up in the mountains (8000-9000ft) and noticed that in 4th gear at 5000rpm going up a long hill, the intake makes a droning sound kind of like a riced exhaust. anyone have this issue?

I wonder if CAI's make as much noise because the filter is in body of the car, not under the hood... I'll try to make a mount with rubber for the intake where it bolts to the manifold and see if that helps, but I don't think it will.

oh well, at least I have a few extra ponies under the hood
