STINKY engine, burning something!
I have a 2.5L Legacy Wagon, and after I park it, that thing STINKS -- a very nasty smell coming from right under the hood, like burned oil. I checked the oil level, and it is fine; all of my other fluids are also topped off. The engine only has 36k miles on it, so I don't think I need piston rings or a cylinder head gasket... What could be making that smell?
Have a subaru mechanic check the cam cover gasket, my 99 had one go bad and it smelled horrible. I used some gasket stop leak from pep boys and it made it bearable for a while.

if just the crank seal is leaking now, the oil pump and o-ring will leak shortly. replace oil pump seals(o ring, and grey rtv cement between oil pump and block), front crank seal, and cam seals as well as timing belt. we saw far too many "well just do that one" sort of things. a month later they come back, yelling and screaming b/c they are leaking again, and we didn't fix the problem. it just saves time and energy, and money to do it all at once. and then you're good to go for another 60-100k.

With only 36k on this engine (which means at least 36k more on the timing belt, I hope!) I doubt this is severe enough to need that much work -- perhaps Arizona heat has cooked my engine??
I'll let you know what the problem is once I get it into the shop.
