Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

No catback should throw a CEL. There are tons of discussions about the merits of exhaust though. Probably 1/3 of the threads in this forum touch on exhaust.

Question

""No catback should throw a CEL""

...so it's mainly putting on a aftermarket intake that triggers the CEL on the 2.5 engine then?

...and does SOA give people crap about having a catback on their cars when they are brought in for warentee work, or not usually?

Even intakes don't do it all that often. It's usually headers or high-flow cats that cause the problem. Aftermarket exacts *shouldn't* affect your warranty, but some dealers will hassle you for it just because they can. If you're not sure which is the case with the dealer you want to use, just swap the stock back on. This is a good reason for keeping all your stock parts instead of tossing them on eBay.

Car Info: Subaru
In seven years of being a service manager for subaru. I have never seen a header cause a check engine light. As long as the factory cats are not disturbed , subaru will honor warranty. Same goes for Catback.

Some people on the boards have reported CELs from Borlas, MRTs, and Brullens. Probably far less than half of those running them though.

True, they are pretty rare, but the original post was asking about CELs from cat backs... I just wanted to clarify to him that they almost always arise from using high-flow (or no) cats and occasionally from headers. None of the parts discussed thus far SHOULD throw a CEL, but they MIGHT. Possibly. Maybe.
