P0420 code and I'm pissed

**** you stupid cat **** you in the ****ing *** **** you you ****ing monkey ****ing **** **** you.

Had a P0420 code on my 2000 RS for awhile after a blow headgasket. Replaced the cat today, no CEL after running for awhile at the shop. Of course, 4 blocks down the street, CEL comes back on. Might be a different code, and maybe one day pigs will fly across the sky as free as birds.

Let me guess.

No on the new oxygen sensors? I'd guess they're fouled or something, and are giving you false readings, since you had the head gasket issue. If you have replaced both oxygen sensors, then I'd start the swearing, but hold off until then if I were you.

2 oxygen sensors costs more than the cat does. Do you think cleaning them might help? I am thinking of just installing one of those rear sensor "extenders" that keeps the sensor farther from the exhaust. Seems to solve alot of problems with other people who have had P0420 and replaced cat and sensors to no avail.

just replace the front... the rear is for reading but doesn't actually do anything... always change your front o2 if you blew a head gasket... I am sure Roo or Unit 91 can help you with the part number and price. Good luck!

All the rear does it make sure the cat is working. The front is usually why you'll throw a code. Are you SURE the cat was bad and not just the sensor in the first place?

Anyhow, I can get you more info on Monday if you want.

Right on man thanks for the help. Well, the code said cat. And after some research, and the fact that my car smelled, I just kinda figured it was the cat. I am actually right now in the process of importing this car into Canada so that is why this is all getting done.

Right now it would be nice to get rid of the CEL without spending another 200 bucks for the front sensor. I can take it out and look at it, is there something I should be looking for to tell that it is bad or fouled up? Can I clean it? And is it a bad idea to go to a pick-a-part and get a used cheaper sensor that way?

$200 for an O2 sensor? Where do you shop for your parts?

Sparkplugs.com has a Bosch OE identical for $60. http://sparkplugs.com/more_info.asp?...9402&pid=31667

Just what I was quoted recently but maybe the parts are more expensive here in Canada, who knows. Is that one you pointed me to the right one for a 2000 RS?

I read "in the process of importing" so I thought you were still in the states. And yes, the link is for a 2000 RS, it should have the car information right under the "More Info" bolded title. I have no idea how hard it is to install the front O2 sensor on a suby, but I had to recently change one on my stepdad's Honda, and after I bought a O2 sensor socket, it was really easy.
