Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

The Impreza RS came out in 98', which has the 2.5 liter engine in it so a 98' or newer RS would be good. Other than that I'm not sure but I think that the Impreza L 2.2 liter, with AWD, and a 5 speed came out in 96'. Before then, I think that the 5 speeds had the 1.8 Liter. The Impreza came out in 93'.

If you're looking to autocross, you'll have a hard time getting an AWD Impreza for $5k, and will have little money left for mods. The RS models started in '98 and you can't hardly find one for less than $8k, and that would be a 98 with high mileage. A good condition 2000 or 2001 RS with average mileage is still worth $11-13k. A 1993 AWD L would still run close to 4k, and of course would have well over 100k miles. Imprezas aren't really the 'budget' choice for autocross.

Not entirely true, I got my 98 2.2L for 4500 +TT&L, came out to like 4850 or something, and it only had 62K on it.
