Hey all,
I purchased a 99 2.2L about a year ago, and have been saving up to put some work into it. Recently my engine has been tapping (I believe it's the hydraulic lifters that are tapping). This makes me think the person who owned it before didn't take very good care of my baby. The underside metal that sideskirts cover is also all dented, which makes me suspect the previous owner wasn't too good to it.
So anyway, my question is this--I eventually would like to put a turbo in, and do some more mods, this will be part of my senior project for my Mech E major, but as far as now I am just "getting by" with what I can so I will be able to afford it later on. I have 3 years left before I will be attempting any big mods to it, so what should I do with the engine?
If I plan to put in a turbo, I hear the 2.2L engine isn't exactly the best choice? Should I get a new engine, or build a new engine off a 2.5 block? Or should I simply rebuild my current engine?
Any input will be appreciated. I would love to undertake a project like this myself, but if anyone knows of any great place to have engines rebuilt in the Harrisburg or Philadelphia area, please let me know as well.
Looking for prices, time to complete, any information that would be useful, appreciate it...

you can fit a 2.5 liter shot block in the car but if you plan to keep the 2.2 it sounds like you will need to rebuild the block up if you wanna put after market parts on it or it will suck to much air and fuel in old engine will kill it i have a 2.2l myself it mine is pretty quick stock(however it has been taken care of all its life) i would suggest starting with the 2.5 short block the compression will be lower than the reg 2.5 so you can put more boost thru it
Ya, or you could do what I'm doing, which is find a 95 or so Legacy turbo, and doing a swap, the EJ22T is a fully closed deck and capable of handling more boost than a 2.5 block. Just my .02

Hrm...
Valve lash adjustment eh? Not entirely sure if that is something I could easily do myself, or would you suggest a mechanic?
What would it cost, you have any ideas?
