Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

Red face lots of poping sound...

hey guys

after installing my random tech cats, i've noticed an increase of poping sound coming out of my exhuast. I drive an AT so almost everytime i let go of the gas(after fairly hard drive), I can hear the pop. Is this something I should be worried about?

oh my power mods are

Ganz Intake
Borla Headers
Random Tech Cat
Cobb Catback
Cobb "Street" cams

are there any gaskets that you forgot to install with the cats? forgeting gaskets can lead to cold air entering the exhaust system and causing a "storm" with the hot air...thus the "pop" or backfire.

its typical with any kind of real exhaust mods. Subaru's do it naturally from the factory, just the stock piping usually supresses it a little. Adding things like headers, exhaust, high flow cat/track pipe, and especially cams will increase this "popping" sound.

I have a small leak between the cat and the mid pipe, since random tech cat pipe didn't come with a donut like the stock one, so the shop put 2 gaskets there. I guess thats why I hear it so much, since it doesn't seem like a big deal I wont worry about it as much.

thanks for all the responses.

Mine does it as well but I love it! I don't hear no Civics popping... just their annoying whine. :-D

I've heard that the pop might mean that your car (mine too) is running too lean. Someone suggested to me that some engine management would not only take away the pop, but add a few hp when it evens out the air/fuel ratio.

would a chip like the Proecm work to correct the problem of running to lean?

it would make more sense if it was running rich since the pop is probably excess gas being burnt up in the exhaust.

I believe when we say Rich or Lean, we are talking about the amount of oxygen. Right guys?

rich or lean refers to the ammount of gas in the air/fuel mixture

i was told that subarus pop naturally because of the richer AFR that they run from the factory.
