K&N panel filter silenced my exhaust

K&N panel filter silenced my exhaust
i have a '99 impreza 2.2L so it has the EJ22 engine. i have stock exhaust and it sounded pretty good when u give it a little gas especially in the 4-5k rpm range. so i decided to buy a K&N panel filter from a local NAPA parts store. and its the right filter and im 98% sure i installed it correctly but now my exhaust is ABSOLUTLY SILENT. i threw away the original panel filter (which wasnt very dirty BTW) so i cant put that back in and test it. WTF someone help me
