Does it do it when cold or after the engine is warmed up? If it does it when cold, it could be the cam belt tensioner. Common problem with WRX's. Could happen to your car, too.
Oh, and DO NOT use Slick 50 for any reason. Teflon was not meant for use in engines. It can't handle the heat.

it does it even when warmed up , i always warm it up at least 5 min no matter what weather condiiton outside , how do i check the tensioner , do you think it maybe be my oil i checked it is on correct level i am running a 5-30 syntec blend , the oil gage the thing that read " at oil temp" fashed on me once , i waited turned motor off , kicked her right up and nothing , i am clueless , i mean it isnt like a catastrophic noise but still annoying for a car with 17k on it
thanks for all info

Yea mine ticks too but mine are the rods. Hope you dont have internal injuries like I do get it checked out before it causes more damage. Or you will be looking for a new engine like I am. Good luck!

I believe I too am getting louder clicking and ticking noises at idle and low RPM. Not positive though. I'm conveniently ignoring it though since I have abuot 25k left on the powertrain warranty and haven't noticed a loss of power or mileage.

well with this perticular problem there are a few quick easy ways to try to resolve the problem.
1) remove all oil out of the vehicle and fill with transmission fluid, preferably dex-3. run for 5 minutes with the dex-3 fluid in the car. then drain out and then change oil and filter. this will not hurt you motor, it will just clean your lifter areas from any deposits.
2) run an engine flush through the engine and run for 5 minutes. then change oil and filter.
3) switch to a heavier weight oil. I run 10-30 weight oil in my car and the ticking is now normal.

Carl,
what kind of flush would you recommend? The rational part of my brain comprehends how one type of lubricant can be temporarily substituted for another, but the part that makes me race is horrified by the idea of ATF in my engine.
Engine flush seems much safer.

it seems possible to run trannny fluid in the engine as it takes a higher heat load than engine oil. found this out when the mechanic put engine oil int the tranny by mistake (newly installed tranny). A unit drove the patrol car out and got about 2 - 3 kms. before it literally blew a hole out the bottom and destroyed the new tranny.
